KHS releases winter sports schedules for 2021
By Chapin Jewell
KEYSER - Better late than never, they say. Normally, the winter sports season in West Virginia interscholastic sports sees games, contests and meets in sports like basketball and wrestling in early to mid-December. Thanks to the COVID-affected calendar, this season, practice won’t even begin until Feb.15, with actual games beginning just as March begins.
Again, better late than never. In neighboring Allegany County, for example, winter sports have been scrapped all together; there will be no basketball or wrestling for Fort Hill, Allegany or Mountain Ridge.
In Mineral County, athletic directors Shawn White at Keyser and Jay Hesse at Frankfort have been hard at work putting together schedules for both winter and spring sports.
The schedules look a little different this year. For starters, in winter sports, Keyser and Frankfort’s schedules are more compact and condensed, and there will be no games against neighboring Fort Hill, Allegany, Mountain Ridge, Northern and Southern.
This article identifies Keyser High School’s winter sports schedules to include wrestling, boys’ varsity, junior varsity, and freshman basketball, and varsity and junior varsity girls’ basketball. An article containing Frankfort’s winter schedules will come later.
In wrestling, coach Colin Rotruck’s mat men will open the season at Berkeley Springs on March 5 and March 6 at Berkeley Springs for the Potomac Valley Conference tournament. Next will be a trip to Petersburg on March 10, followed by a quad match at home against Weir Hedgesville and Jefferson on March 13. A match for March 17 is to be determined, then the Golden Tornado will travel to East Fairmont for a quad.
March 24 will bring a tri-match at home with Moorefield and East Hardy, then comes a March 27 tri-match at Oak Glen against St. Mary’s and Morgantown.
