KEYSER - The staff from the Mineral County School of Practical Nursing has been named 2019 Practical Nursing Program of the Year.
The school was honored on Sept. 11, 2019 at the West Virginia Adult Education Association Conference at Stonewall Resort in Roanoke, West Virginia.
This prestigious award was given based upon the following criteria:
- Completion rates
- NCLEX-PN passage rates
- Percentage of students entering post-secondary programs
- Percentage of students obtaining employment
Mineral County ranked top among the 26 Practical Nursing Programs in the state, with an 84 percent completion rate and a 100 percent NCLEX-PN passage rate.
Mineral County School of Practical Nursing was started in 1991 by Rita Jean Harber, who is still very active with the program by serving on the advisory committee.
The one-year program accepts 25 students each year.  Students complete classroom courses including Social Concepts of Nursing, Fundamentals of Nursing, anatomy, pharmacology, nutrition, MedSurg, and several specialty courses. They also are put through rigorous clinical training in areas such as geriatrics, medical surgical nursing, pediatrics, obstetrics and behavioral health.
Students also receive training to prepare them to enter into nursing practice. They participate in Mock Interviews, where staff from several  local healthcare agencies put students through interviews and then provide feedback to the students on how they could improve their interviewing skills.
Jennifer Simpson, coordinator of the Practical Nursing Program, explained that “the program is dedicated to developing hardworking, knowledgeable, prepared nurses.
“We want to produce the type of nurses that we would want taking care of our family and loved ones,” she said.
“Rita Harber worked diligently to build up the reputation of this program and we intend to keep that reputation strong.”  She went on to say that “we wouldn’t be successful without the support of our Administration, our Advisory Committee, Mineral County Board of Education, our clinical partners and our dedicated students.”
