KEYSER - West Virginia University Potomac State College is encouraging students who don’t live on campus, often referred to as commuters, to become involved in campus life this year.
The college experience is more than classes and labs. It also involves joining clubs, attending events and socializing with other students.
Commuter students can take advantage of various activities like getting involved with the Student Government Association, partaking of the many offerings at the Recreation Center, attending free events at the Church-McKee Arts Center, and participating in intramural sports, along with other student activities.
Fall semester classes start Wednesday, Aug. 21, and the college has numerous ‘Welcome Week’ activities planned for new, returning, transfer, and commuter students.
New students begin moving into the residence halls on Sunday, Aug. 18; a family farewell picnic is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Students will then have the opportunity to meet the resident assistants as well as other students.
On Monday, new students will participate in the Catamounts Serve community service project which is required of all first-time freshmen and transfer students. This will be followed by a welcome lunch, fall kick-off and academic majors fair.
When returning students check in on Tuesday, more activities are planned, including career exploration, a scavenger hunt, and Welcomefest, featuring a rock-climbing wall or obstacle course; corn hole; and a DJ, along with Italian ice and other light refreshments. The day finishes with a country roads bar-b-que, featuring meat and produce from the college’s farms, ice cream and caricature sketches by a professional artist.
Other events include shopping shuttles to Walmart and the Country Club Mall; DJs; Pinterest night; student involvement fair; ballistic bowling; and a community and health services fair.
