WESTERNPORT - Lisa Harris' kindergarten students at Westernport Elementary School released their first batch of monarch butterflies for the year on Thursday.
Mrs. Harris and her students have watched monarch caterpillars change and grow during the different life stages and were fortunate to see one that was so small that a magnifying glass was necessary to see it's stripes.
The students took turns releasing 14 beautiful monarchs which Mrs. Harris tagged.
The students are hopeful that one of their butterflies will be tracked to Mexico.  Last year, one of the butterflies (tag #WJC 552) which was released on Sept. 19, 2016, was recovered in Cerro Pelon, Mexico, in February. This particular monarch traveled at least 2,397.5 miles.
