WILEY FORD - A Shanks, West Virginia man lost his life late Friday as the result of a two-vehicle head-on collision on Route 28 (Frankfort Highway) in the area of Press’ Market near Wiley Ford.
According to the Mineral County Sheriff’s Department, Troya Smith, 58, of Shanks, was operating a 2004 Ford Ranger when another vehicle crossed over the center line into the southbound lane and collided with his vehicle.
Smith was killed on impact and pronounced dead on the scene by local EMS.
Deputies said the driver of the second vehicle, Tyler Sweitzer, 24, of Oakland, was traveling north in a 2015 Ford Escape at a speed greater than the posted 40 mph, and crossed over the center line for unknown reasons.
Witnesses told deputies that Smith had no time to react to Sweitzer crossing into his path.
Sweitzer sustained injuries in the collision and was transported to Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for treatment, and was later life flighted to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
Initial investigation showed possible use of a controlled dangerous substance and a charge of DUI involving death was filed against Sweitzer through Mineral County Magistrate Court.
The investigation is currently ongoing.
