He was raised in Westernport, on Stoney Run Road, and attended Hammond Street Elementary School and Westernport Elementary School. He graduated from Bruce High School in 1966.

He has served as pastor of a church in South Carolina.
From 1986-88, Dohm and his wife lived in Germany and established a church, which he served as pastor.
In 1999, he enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Germany and began work on his doctorate. While working on his doctorate, he served as pastor in a German-speaking church.
Dohm has since returned home to the United States and is now professor of religion and German at Newberry College in South Carolina.
He has been married 45 years and he and his wife call South Carolina home. He says, however, that part of their hearts will always be in Westernport, Keyser, and the surrounding area.
