The Keyser Area Ministerial Association Church League wrapped up the 2008 season on Tuesday, March 18 at the Keyser Middle School gymnasium with two exciting championship games. In “A” league play, undefeated Grace 1 fell to Calvary-Assembly 43-42 and Presbyterian-Grace defeated Mt. Zion West 61-47 to capture the Senior League title.
Led by Levi Spencer’s game-high 25 points, Calvary-Assembly took an early and commanding lead and then held on as Grace 1 mounted a furious comeback in the final minutes of the game. Drew Roy spearheaded the effort with most of his 11-points coming in the final stanza. Rounding out the scoring for Grace 1 were Colton Harman with 10, Michael Mallow with 8, Tristan Bruce added 7, and Joey Parrill chipped in 6.
Contributing to Calvary-Assembly’s winning effort were Joseph Moats with 8, T.J. Housel added 5, Eli Barr had 3, and Connor Housel made the scorebook with 2 points.
In the Senior League championship game, Presbyterian-Grace’s Maverick Nelson scorched the nets with a game-high 34 points. Teammate Scott Smith had 15, Logan DelSignore added 6, Justin Hanlin hit for two, and the crowd erupted when Kwabena Asiama scored a two-point goal in the final seconds of the game.
Tim Sirk poured in 18-points to lead Mt. Zion West, followed by John Purdy’s 13, Brandon Wilson with 9, Josh Siesky added 6, and Casey Lee had 1.
The night before, in the senior league semi-final games, Calvary-Janes fell to Mt. Zion West 54-44 and Fountain saw their season come to an end as Presbyterian-Grace defeated them 55-46.
Matt Snyder led Calvary-Janes with a game high 22-points, Lester Clifford added 10, Lee Phillips contributed 7, and David Hudron had 5. Mt. Zion West had a balanced scoring effort with Brandon Wilson’s team-high 16, John Purdy adding 12, Bob See with 11, Tim Sirk and Casey Lee both had six, and Josh Siesky chipped in 3 points.
In the match up between Presbyterian-Grace and Fountain, Fountain’s Mike Nelson had 24 points. Also scoring for Fountain were Colton Jones with 12, Steve Nelson with 6, Chris Riley adding 3, and Zack Cummings with 1. In the scorebook for the Presbyterian-Grace win were Maverick Nelson with 18 points, Justin Hanlin 14, Scott Smith 11, Logan DelSignore 8, and Kevin Knotts and Tristin Keller both had 2.
In the A league semi-final games Calvary-Assembly defeated Presbyterian 35-29 and Grace 1 slipped by Piedmont Pentecostal 48-45. Piedmont’s Marquel Wilson led all scorers with 21. Fellow team members Damon Bowman had 10, Jalen Oates had 7, Stephen Wise added 5, and Gene Keyes hit for 2. Scoring for Grace 1 shows Michael Mallow with 18, Joey Parill with 8, Colton Harman and Tristin Bruce both with 7, Drew Roy with 6, and Cecil Burner added 2.
Scoring for Presbyterian in their loss to Calvary-Assembly were Bryan Amtower with 10, Cole Engle with 8, Jordan Foster with 6, and Cody Pancake with 5. Levi Spencer’s 14 points and T.J Housel’s 10 paced the Calvary effort. Additional scoring was provided by Tyler Isner with 6, Conner Housel with 3, and Joseph Moats with 2.
According to Dan Dawson, church league director, more than 300 players participated in the program this year. Play is offered at three levels, the A, B, and Senior Leagues. “B” is for 3rd thru 5th graders, “A” for 6th thru 8th, and 9th thru 12th graders play in the Senior League.
