The George’s Creek Soccer Club is currently readying itself for the Lisa and Corey Races.
This year’s races will take place on Saturday, July 11 at Creekside Park in Westernport.
Registration begins at 7:00 a.m., with the races beginning at 8:30.
Race courses consist of the Lisa Wade 5K Run, which includes a 5K race and a 1.5 mile fun run/walk, and Corey’s Course, a handicap-friendly 15-minute walk around Creekside Park.
After the races are completed, the festivities continue with great refreshments, awards to the winners, and numerous door prizes.
This year’s door prizes include autographed items from Tiger Woods, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Debbie Phelps, mother of Olympian Michael Phelps.
Lisa’s Run, in it’s ninth year, is held in memory of Lisa Wade, daughter of Dan and Lois Wade.
Lisa was a student-athlete at Westmar High School.
In 2000, at the age of 15, she was the victim of a vehicle/pedestrian accident near her home in the Backbone Mountain area of Swanton.
Corey’s Course is named in memory of Lisa’s cousin, Corey Broadwater of Fort Ashby.
Corey, the son of Don and Glenda Broadwater, passed away in 2008 after an almost-22 year struggle with cerebral palsy.
After Corey’s passing, plans were made to implement Corey’s Course as part of the Lisa Wade 5K Run.
This is the second year for Corey’s Course.
Proceeds from the race fund scholarships at local high schools.
The Lisa Wade Scholarship is given at Mountain Ridge, Northern, and Southern High Schools to a graduating member of the girls’ soccer team who exemplifies the qualities that best describe Lisa: dependable, hard-working, loyal, fun-loving, friendly, and outgoing
Steve Amann, race coordinator, was Lisa’s high school socer coach.
He stressed that “although this award is given to an athlete, it is not an athletic award. It is a character award. It is not something that is won by luck or chance. Rather, it is earned by the honoree. The recipient should be proud knowing she has earned the respect of her coaches and teachers.”
The Corey M. Broadwater Special Achievement Award has been established to be given to a graduating student in Mineral County who shows a drive to succeed despite a personal life challenge.
Corey’s father, Don Broadwater, summed up the award.
“Corey was confined to a wheelchair, and faced many obstacles in his life. Yet he met life with determination and a positive attitude. Every one of us face challenges in life. It’s not the challenges, but how we deal with them, that make us who we are.
Recipients of the 2009 Lisa Wade Scholarship are Corrie Ferree, Mountain Ridge; Kelsey Jones, Northern Garrett; and Brooke Baier, Southern Garrett.
Award-winners of the 2009 Corey M. Broadwater Special Achievement Award are William Davis of Keyser and Hunter McGregor of Frankfort.
A portion of each person’s race registration fee helps fund all the scholarships.
Participants can decide which of the three courses fit their physical abilities and can take pleasure in knowing that they are supporting commendable award for area graduates.
