Potomac State Baseball will host five games in the next three days as they host Monroe Community College for a doubleheader Saturday and a single game on Monday. PSC will play host to Harford Community College on Sunday for a twin bill.
Saturday’s games start at 1 p.m., Sunday’s games are also set for a 1 p.m. start and Monday’s single game will begin at 2 p.m.
Sunday will also be the 4th Annual GOLD RUSH at Golden Park. Gates will open at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
Potomac State, (20-4) is led by sophomore shortstop Jacke Healey, who has 36 hits, including seven doubles, two triples and seven home runs, 32 RBIs and 29 runs.
Freshman outfielder Justin Grantham has 33 hits, including six doubles, 10 RBIs and 29 runs on the season, while sophomore third baseman Matt Schrader has 31 hits, including 10 doubles, and two home runs, 27 RBIs and 15 runs.
Along with Healey, Potomac State has two other batters hitting above .400.
Jason Lombard and Chris Szafran are hitting .407 and .405 respectively. Lombard, a Winchester, Va. native has three doubles, two home runs and 12 runs batted in.
Szafran, a Keyser High School graduate, has added two double and five stolen bases on the season.
Freshman Kevin Griffin is hitting .667 in his last three games including a single and a double in Wednesday’s 5-3 comeback win at Chesapeake Community College. The Martinsburg, W.Va. native is now hitting at a .348 clip with four doubles and three home runs.
Potomac State is currently 10th in the NJCAA in hitting with their .373 team batting average.
On Saturday, the Catamounts will look to sophomore Nathan Fike to lead PSC from the mound. The left-handed pitcher is 3-0 on the season, striking out 37 batters, walking 7 and allowing 4 runs on 19 hits. He has an ERA of 1.44 on the season.
He is currently ranked 8th in the NJCAA in strikeouts per inning. Freshman right-hander Andy Berry will pitch game two on Saturday for the Catamounts (3-0, 4.76 ERA, 12K, 4BB 17 IP).
Last season Monroe Community College defeated Potomac State 5-1 in a rain shortened game at Golden Park. In that game, Potomac State could muster just three hits against Monroe starter Michael Sapp, who struck out seven and walked two to pick up the win. The lone run he allowed was unearned.
On Sunday, PSC will turn to freshman Jonathan Hash to start game one. The Jefferson High School grad picked up the win in relief on Wednesday at Chesapeake. The right-hander is 4-0 on the season, striking out 34 batters, walking 8 and allowing 6 runs on 23 hits. He has an ERA of 1.90.
Matt Morrone is expected to pitch game two on Sunday against Harford Community College, (2-1, 2.57 ERA, 16K, 21IP).
Potomac State swept Harford last season in a doubleheader at Bel Air, MD. Potomac State belted nine homeruns, four coming off the bat of current West Virginia University first baseman Joe Agreste.
The Catamounts collected twenty-five hits in the 16-0 and 18-1 wins.
On Monday, Monroe CC comes back to Golden Park for a single game starting at 1 p.m.
Sophomore Andy Altemus is expected to make the start for Potomac State. The Morgantown, WV native is 4-1 on the year, striking out 34 hitters walking 11 and allowing 11 runs on 31 hits.
He has an ERA of 3.03 in 32 2/3 innings pitched.
This weekend’s festivities include the 4th Annual GOLD RUSH at Golden Park on Sunday. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a free GOLD RUSH 4 t-shirt.
Prizes will be given away after each half inning of game one and one lucky fan will walk away with a free 27” color television donated by Hayward Wilson Insurance. Fans are invited to all five games as well as a number of weekend activities as part of Potomac State’s Weekend of Honors.
Note: Former Potomac State Baseball coach Jack Reynolds, who will be inducted to the Potomac State Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday night, will be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch on Sunday.
Potomac State has won seven games in a row and 20 as their last 21 games.
