Keyser holds Southern at the line

KEYSER—Lexi Carr's four made free throws in the final 18 seconds clinched a 43-38 win for the Keyser Lady Tornado against the Southern Lady Rams last night at Tornado Alley.
Keyser led by as many as 10 points with 2:53 left, but Raeslee Weimer's three with 37 seconds to go cut the cushion all the way down to three.
Carly Grady scored 19 points to lead Keyser.
Carr scored eight, six in the final quarter, to go with three assists.
Elizabeth Yaider scored six points and pulled down seven rebounds, and Meghan Anderson and Sam Hoban scored five each.
Hoban also had six steals and Anderson swiped three to go with seven rebounds.
Mandy Sweitzer led Southern with nine points against a Keyser defense that was very effective until the final few minutes.
Weimer and Alycia Horner each tallied eight points.
Both teams started slow, but it was Southern that took an early 4-0 lead on jumpers by Alycia Horner and Hannah Horne.
Keyser, though, scored the final six points of the quarter, getting two baskets from Meghan Anderson and a Lexi Carr layup to lead by a pair after one frame.
A Carly Grady jumper made it eight unanswered for Keyser, then Mandy Sweitzer broke the 5 ½ minute drought for Southern.
Grady and Lindsay Brady exchanged baskets, and Keyser led, 14-9, with 3:23 left in the half.
Sweitzer sank two free throws, then Elizabeth Yaider scored on a stick-back, but had to sit with three fouls.
After a made Sweitzer free throw, Grady and Sam Hoban scored baskets to put KHS on top by eight, 20-12, at the half.
Keyser continued to extend the lead: Grady caught and laid in an Anderson pass, then Hoban made one of two at the line.
Grady made a pair, then Kambrie Bosley ended Keyser's 9-0 run with a made three.
After a Hoban layup, Horne made a tough off-balance shot on the baseline with 4:05 left in the third quarter.
Sweitzer and Yaider exchanged baskets to keep it a 10-point game with 3:16 left, then neither team scored again until Raeslee Weimer's field goal for Southern with a minute to go.
Grady made one of two with 48.1 seconds left, then Brady was fouled after the buzzer and made one of two.
Keyser led after three, 30-22.
Sweitzer's layup made it a six-point game at the 7:26 mark.
With both teams unable to score, Keyser took a timeout with 5:22 left.
Grady's two made free throws with 3:43 left ended Keyser's scoring drought of over six minutes, but Bosley answered, laying up a saved loose ball at the 3:29 mark.
Keyser led, 32-26.
Out of a Southern timeout, Carr drove to the hoop, scored two, and was fouled.
She missed the free throw, but Anderson's steal the other way gave Keyser possession, and Yaider's high banking layup restored the double-digit lead with 2:53 left.
Horner's second-chance basket cut the lead back to eight, and Southern took another timeout with 2:29 left.
With the Lady Rams trying to trap, Keyser worked some clock, then Carr was fouled with 1:55 to go.
Keyser was in the bonus, but Carr missed the front end.
With 1:40 left, Weimer made her first at the line, then missed the second.
Keyser navigated the press, and Anderson was grabbed with 1:17 left.
Two shots: first was good, second was missed.
Keyser led by eight, 37-29, but Horner quickly made a layup for Southern.
The Lady Rams took a timeout trailing by six with 1:07 to go.
Keyser turned it over against the press, and a layup cut the lead down to four with 54.7 ticks remaining.
KHS beat the pressure this time, and Grady was fouled.
She made both: 39-33, KHS, heading into a timeout with 45.3 seconds left.
Weimer, though, hit a clutch three to halve the lead with 37 seconds to go.
Southern was within one possession for the first time since 14-11.
Out of a Southern timeout, Keyser took a timeout of their own, just before a five-second call could be made on the inbounds pass.
A poor pass gave the ball back to Southern with 34.7 seconds left.
The Rams' shot went out of bounds with 20.6 to go.
Southern kicked the first inbounds pass, then Carr caught the second and was fouled with 18 seconds left.
Carr made the critical first, then swished the second, too.
Horner and Bosley worked for a shot, and Horner hit a deep two with 6.7 seconds left.
But Carr came up big again, making two more to kill off the game.
Keyser's five seniors (Anderson, Markisha Coleman, Molly Cuthbertson, Jasmine Redman, and Yaider) were honored before the game.
Keyser maintained their rankings of ninth in this week’s Associated Press poll and the 10-spot in the state coaches’ poll.
Keyser won the JV game, 44-28.
Erica White scored 15 points and Beth Biser added seven.
Crystal Tobery and Faith Tichnell each scored eight for Southern.
Keyser (12-5) closes the season with all but one game on the road, and have a week off before heading to Fort Hill next Monday.
