The Keyser boys track team capped off a great season by finishing 5th at the State Track Meet in Charleston this past weekend. Keyser sent fourteen boys to the meet after winning the Region II AA Championship on May 9th.
The weekend got off to a great start on Friday afternoon when the Shuttle Hurdle Relay team of Jeremy Green, Kaison Rohrbaugh, Jarell Ross and Grant Blaisdell won the State Championship in school record time of 57.99 seconds. The time was just six tenths of a second off of the state record. “The guys ran a great race and there was no doubt about the outcome.” said Keyser Head Coach Scott Furey. Blaisdell, Ross and Green were on the State Championship team last year as well. “It’s not often you get a chance to repeat, but these guys are already talking about a three-peat.” said Furey. Blaisdell was the lone senior on the relay squad.
Keyser also placed in three other relays in Charleston. On Saturday, the 4x200 relay team of Green, Rohrbaugh, Taige Redman and Tyler Hartman finished second with another school record time of 1:31.91. The time was .36 seconds behind the winning time of 1:31.55 by Oak Glen. The 4x100 team of Redman, Green, Ross and Matt Wilmer finished fourth with a time of 44.91 seconds, which was just .69 seconds out of first. “The 4x100 was a great race with the top four teams competing right down to the finish line.” said Furey. The 4x400 team of Ross, Redman, Rohrbaugh and Drew Gilbert finished fourth with a time of 3:33.32.
Senior, Kevin Smith, who was the Regional Champion in the shot put finished fourth with a throw of 43 feet even and Wilmer finished fifth in the long jump with a jump of 19 feet 10 inches. Every athlete or relay team that finishes in the top six at the state meet are considered to be All-State.
The KHS boys finish the season with a 64-16 record. “This team has been a joy to work with. We’re young and looking for an even better year next year.” said Furey.
The Keyser girls also had a fine showing and finished in 17th place in Charleston after taking fifteen ladies to compete. The ladies performed above the expectations of the “experts” who didn’t predict them to place in a single event. Junior, Matraca Shirley finished 5th in the discus throw with a throw of 96 feet 10 inches and senior, Lindsay Broadwater finished with a sixth place throw of 33 feet 1 inch. The 4x800 relay team of Jordan Derryberry, Kathleen Myers, Kourtni Roby and Brittany Freeburn finished sixth with a time of 10:39.87 and the 4x400 team of Derryberry, Roby, Myers and Sha’ kia Coates placed fifth with a time of 4:20.85.
