KEYSER—With defenses geared to stop Berkeley Springs' Deidra Burch and Keyser's Carly Grady, last night's game turned into a battle of supporting casts.
And Keyser's took center stage.
Sam Hoban scored 16 points, all in the second half, and pulled down five rebounds to lead the Lady Tornado to a 63-49 win over the Lady Indians.
Markisha Coleman made three threes and hit all four of her free throws to finish with 13 points.
Grady had nine points and seven rebounds, while Lexi Carr, back in the fold after missing all but the first five quarters of the season with a broken collarbone, returned to score seven and grab three steals.
Meghan Anderson also had seven points for KHS.
Elizabeth Yaider had 11 rebounds, seven on the offensive end.
Keyser had 16 assists on their 20 field goals, led by Hoban's five, Carr's four, and Grady's three.
Sydne Yanez scored 16 points for Berkeley Springs, while Burch had 11 and Casey Solomon eight.
With the win, Keyser moves to 5-0 in the section and virtually assures themselves of the top seed in the upcoming playoffs.
Seeding is voted on by the coaches in the opposite section, and, with some in the audience, Keyser put on a show in the third quarter, scoring 19 points in a 4 ½ minute span to build a 20-point lead.
Frankfort is second with a 3-2 mark in the section, while Berkeley Springs closes out at 2-4.
Petersburg is winless, with dates at Frankfort and home against Keyser still left.
And although Berkeley Springs got as close as nine in the fourth quarter, Hoban made seven of eight from the stripe in the final frame to keep the lead secure.
The first quarter was back-and-forth.
Jasmine Redman got Keyser on the board first, then Sydne Yanez answered with a layup for Berkeley Springs.
The Lady Indians took the lead on a Casey Solomon layup, but Markisha Coleman canned back-to-back threes for Keyser.
KHS led, 8-4, with 4:34 left in the first quarter.
Lauren Schetrompf answered with a three for Berkeley, then a Solomon layup flipped the lead to the visitors, 9-8, with 3:13 left in the quarter.
Two Coleman free throws put Keyser back ahead, then the period ended where it started: Yanez and Redman scoring.
Keyser led by one, 12-11, heading to the second quarter.
Carly Grady's made free throw 41 seconds into the period moved the lead to two, but Casandra Burch's bank shot tied the score again at 13.
But Keyser went on a 6-0 run to seize the lead for the rest of the half.
Meghan Anderson, Lexi Carr, and Elizabeth Yaider each scored field goals for KHS, who led 19-13 with 4:43 left in the half.
A basket by Yanez broke the spell, then Yaider answered with a stick-back.
Solomon made one of two at the line, but Grady scored from Yaider's assist and then returned the favor to Carr on the fast break.
Keyser's advantage was nine, 25-16, with 27 seconds left in the half.
Deidra Burch worked off of a screen for her first points for Berkeley Springs with seven seconds left, but Keyser got down the floor quickly, and Redman beat the buzzer with a bank shot.

Solomon's free throw and Yanez's layup cut the lead to six, 28-21, with 6:31 left in the third quarter.
Hoban made one of two at the line, then Burch scored a layup.
But then Carr dribbled through the Indians defense for a layup, then ran the two-on-one break to Anderson for a layup.
Suddenly, points were coming in sheets: Hoban hit a three, then converted a three point play.
Coleman swished a three, making it 13 unanswered for Keyser.
The lead was 18, 41-23, with 1:57 left in the third quarter.
Burch ended the run with a nice individual effort to attack the basket, then Grady answered with a three-point play.
Burch answered with a fade, then Grady did it again.
Keyser led, 47-27, but took their foot off of the gas.
Berkeley Springs scored the final five points of the third quarter and the first five of the fourth to halve the lead to ten points, 47-37, with 6:09 left.
Hoban broke the spell with two made free throws, but Caitlyn Napfel answered with a bank shot the other way.
Yaider made one of two, then Solomon hit both.
Keyser led by nine, 50-41, with 5:18 left.
Hoban dribbled through the press for a layup, then Yanez stuck back a miss.
Hoban turned provider on Keyser's next break, dishing to Anderson for a layup.
Keyser led, 54-43, with 4:31 to go.
With Keyser in the double bonus, Hoban walked to the line with 3:41 left and hit both to move the advantage to 13.
Anderson made one of two a minute later, then, with Keyser continuing to get defensive stops, Hoban hit two more with 2:13 left.
Schetrompf hit a tough shot the other way, but Keyser ran clock until Carr was bumped with 1:21 to go.
She made one of two to extend the cushion to 15.
Burch missed two tough shots, then Hoban—who else—was fouled again.
She made one of two with 50 seconds left, then, after a Berkeley Springs miss, Solomon fouled out checking Coleman.
She made both, and hoops by Yanez and Schetrompf were too little, too late.
Keyser won the JV game, 39-14.
Erica White had 13 points, while Kayla Simon added eight and Katie Tasker six.
Charla McDaniel scored six for Berkeley Springs.
Keyser (11-5) hosts Southern on Monday.
