Former West Virginia University star running back and National Football Leaguestandout, Adrian Murrell has been selected to be the keynote speaker at the thirdannual Howard-Lincoln School Scholarship Banquet.
The banquet will be held on Sunday, May 4, at 3:30 p.m., in the social room of theWashington-Smith American Legion Post 152, at 330 Virginia Street, Keyser.
In its third year, the banquet takes place to present scholarships to graduating students that must be descendants of persons having attended Howard or Lincoln Schools.
During the past, six students have been awarded scholarships.
Murrell was born on October 16, 1970 in Fayetteville, North Carolina and graduated from Leilehua High School, Wahiawa, Hawaii.
At his high school, he set numerous records in football, basketball, and track and field events.
Upon Merrell’s graduation, he received a scholarship to WVU, and during his freshmen year, saw limited action on the football field, as the Mountaineers had a 4-7 season. In 1991, and as a sophomore, he was a starting player while he rushed for 904 yards, completed seven touchdowns, and had 100 receiving yards.
In his junior and final year as a Mountaineer, Murrell rushed for 1,145 years, and also had six touchdowns, 224 receiving yards, and three receiving touchdowns.
He was a college teammate of James Jett.
Murrell left WVU after being drafted in the fifth round of the 1993 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.
During the 1995 season with the Jets, he rushed for 795 years, had two receiving touchdowns, along with 495 receiving yards.
The 1996 season was his best year as a pro and received recognition as the outstanding runner for the Jets, when Murrell rushed for 1,042 yards, made 10 touchdowns, with two of them being receiving.
He was also named to the NFL Pro-Bowl as an alternate. Murrell was traded in 1997 to the Arizona Cardinals and played several years for that team before going to the Washington Redskins for the 2000 season.
Taking a two-year break from the NFL, Murrell then joined with Bill Parcells and the Dallas Cowboys, retiring from that team in 2003.
Murrell and wife, Tonia, along with their children, Tylan, Aryn, and Amari, reside in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Murrell presently heads the Victor Supply Group, a constructional/mechanical company that primarily focuses on the water treatment aspects of outfitting new commercial buildings.
