Friday night the Keyser High School boys and girls track program had one of its best evenings ever at the Regional track meet in Weston, W.Va. The KHS Boys were crowned champions and the girls claimed the fourth-place spot in the nine-team meets.
The championship is the second in four years for the boys team, which will be sending 14 athletes to Charleston to compete in 15 events. In running events, the top three places in each of the four regions are automatic qualifiers and the next four fastest times for all the regions combined round out the field of 16 in each event. In field events, the top four finishers in the region and any athlete meeting a set standard for their event also qualify.
The boys relay teams enjoyed an especially good night as they placed first in the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and Shuttle Hurdle relays and finished second in the 4x800 relay. The 4x100 relay team (44.89) is comprised of Matt Wilmer, Jarell Ross, Jeremy Green and Taige Redman. The 4x200 team (1:33.29) is made up of Green, Redman, Tyler Hartman and Kaison Rohrbaugh. Rohrbaugh, Ross, Green and Grant Blaisdell make up the defending State Champion Shuttle Hurdle team, which broke the school record Friday with a 58.06 second mark. The mark is the best in the state thus far. The 4x400 team (3:31.49) consists of Rohrbaugh, Redman, Ross and Drew Gilbert, while the 4x800 (8:39.70) team will send Gilbert, Taven Rohrbaugh, Dustin Fertig and Ryan Shreve as representatives.
Several KHS boys will be competing in individual events as well. Matt Wilmer, a junior, will be running the 100-meter dash and long jumping, juniors Kaison Rohrbaugh and Redman will run the 400m dash, and senior Drew Gilbert will be in the 1600 meter run. Senior Grant Blaisdell qualified in the 100 meter high hurdles as well as the 300 meter intermediate hurdles. Freshman Peyton Hartman will compete in the high jump. Senior Kevin Smith was the regional champion in the shot put with a put of 44 feet 2 inches, and sophomore Brandon Wilson qualified in the Shot Put and finished second in the discus with a throw of 124 feet 1inch.
The KHS girls team finished fourth in the meet and will send 15 athletes to Charleston to compete in 11 events. Like the boys, the girls team will send all five relay teams to compete. The 4x100 team (54.42) of Kacee Whetzel, Christina Koontz, Jordan Berryberry and Shakia Coates placed third in Weston. The same four ladies finished third in the 4x200 relay (1:54.89). The 4x400 relay (4:20.16) of Derryberry, Coates, Kourtni Roby and Kathleen Myers also finished third. Derryberry qualified in her fourth event as she helped the 4x800 team (10:33.96) to a second place finish. The shuttle hurdle relay (1:14.53) of Danielle Kesner, Darlene Williams, Tanis Hartman and Tiesha Dawson finished fourth in the region.
