Potomac State outscored the West Virginia Wesleyan jayvee 28-10 over the first 10 minutes and rolled from there to a 102-80 whalloping of the visiting Bobcats last night at Lough Gymnasium.
The rest of the contest was close, and the Bobcats even won a 10-minute span 23-22, but the initial damage was too much to overcome and PSC evened its’ record at 6-6 entering the Christmas Classic at Allegany College of Maryland this weekend.
Allegany High School standout Donovan Vinson led the locals with a 24-point performance, while Vance Hosby tossed in 21 to pace Potomac State.
Vinson got PSC on the board first with a quick layin off the tap, and PSC never looked back or trailed in the contest.
Roy Schneider helped the visitors escape the Jaws of a shutout and ended a Catamount 11-0 initial run with a layup three minutes in. Potomac State began to play sloppy, but still managed to go on a 12-2 run to extend its’ lead to 23-4 behind a couple easy ones by Vinson and point guard Travis Williams.
Potomac became somewhat flat footed at that point, and allowed the Bobcat’s full-court pressure and back-door rotations on offense to cut into its’ substantial lead.
Joey Leech hit a pair of 3-point field goals to start the frenzy, and Wesleyan went on a 13-4 run of its own to trim the advantage to 13 points at 30-17 with 9:16 to play in the first half.
The two teams played dead even to the 4:20 mark, but PSC poured it on late and pulled away to a 21-point lead, 53-32, at halftime.
It seemed as if the locals had their way with the visitors in the second half, but statistically it was a near standstill.
The Bobcats were able to cut the margin to 14 again on two occasions in the second half, the latter coming at the 16:00 mark, but could come no closer.
The only thing in doubt was if Potomac could break the century mark, and Ryan Fiddler hit a short jump shot with 30 seconds to play to make it official.
Marcus Quarles and Dalec Cromwell were the only other Cat’s in double figures with 15 and 12 points respectively.
Williams dished out 11 assists and added nine points for Potomac, while Hosby gathered eight rebounds for the Catamounts.
Nine of Potomac State’s 12 dressed players reached the scoring column in the contest.
West Virginia Wesleyan had a well balanced attack despite the loss.
Joey Leech led the visitors with a 20-point performance, while Adam Smith, Schneider, and Grant Burton all combined to score 10 points each.
Potomac State will return to action this Friday night in Cumberland when it takes on host Allegany College in the opener.
Also participating is national powerhouse Hagerstown Community College, touted as perhaps the best team in the Region XX this year.
