KEYSER, W.Va. - A local legend to the folks of Mineral County, Coach Jim Broome successfully combined two passions throughout his career; coaching sports and playing music.

Jim has been a lifelong Keyser guy, having graduated in 1954 then enlisting in the United States Air Force. After receiving an  honorable discharge in 1958, Jim attended Potomac State College and West Virginia University and graduated with honors. Shortly after his stint in college, the pursuit of passions became a driving force in Jim’s life. In 1962 Coach Broome was hired as a physical education teacher & basketball coach for Keyser Jr. High, yet he still found time to launch his music career as a member of the country music group Thunderhill. The ability to play music professionally and coach simultaneously is a tough task for anybody to juggle, but the dedication to perform at a high level in music and sports puts Coach Jim Broome at the peak of 2 different mountaintops in terms of career accomplishments.

Coach Broome racked up a remarkable record of 1,847-616 in all sports coached, yet he still found time to perform with Thunderhill. The band released multiple hit albums and starred in a feature presentation on national TV playing music for their ‘Thunderhead’ fans almost 35 years before the hit show American Idol debuted.

Jim Broome will always be synonymous with Golden Tornado athletics, the Thunderhill band, and his commitment to the local community having performed numerous charity concerts to benefit Keyser High School.  On Wednesday December 27th Jim and his wife Pat were in attendance at the Holiday Classic while celebrating their 52nd anniversary. The 8th Annual Keyser Freshman Holiday Classic pays homage to the legendary Coach Jim Broome, and this year the basketball event featured 12 teams from high schools in West Virginia and Maryland.
