KEYSER- Coaches constantly try to find creative ways to motivate their team throughout a long season. Coach Josh Blowe dangled a nice reward in front of his team on Tuesday night and the Lady Tornado responded to the challenge. If Keyser was able to accomplish a defensive team goal by preventing Berkeley Springs from scoring 40 points, the team earned a day of rest on Wednesday.
After tipoff, the Lady Tornado flexed their defensive muscle right away jumping out to an early 11-0 lead before Berkeley Springs scored a point midway through the first quarter. In fact Keyser was able to continue the defensive pressure and held the Lady Indians to only 6 points after 8 minutes of play while posting 22 points of their own. In the 2nd quarter, the Indians fought back as Keyser let up on the press. In fact, Berkeley Springs was able to score 15 points in quarter number 2 led by Morgan Smailes #25 who dropped 10 points. Turnovers and sloppy defense allowed the Lady Indians back in the game as the score at halftime was Keyser 33 Berkeley Springs 21. Perhaps at halftime Coach Blowe reiterated his defensive challenge to his team because in the 3rd quarter, it was back to basics for the Lady Tornado. Keyser was able to hold Berkeley Springs to just 6 points in the 3rd quarter while posting 22 points of their own. With a comfortable 56-27 lead, the outcome of the game was no longer in question, but the Keyser kids still had something to play for.
In the 4th quarter the Lady Indians were only able to muster 1 field goal and a total of 9 points to give them a final tally of 36 points for the game.
Mission complete for the Lady Tornado. Lexi Turner led Keyser in scoring with 19 points, while Kearstin Lucas hit two 3 pointers to combine for a total of 15 points. Makenna Staggers dropped in 13 points, Kayla Willison scored 8 points, Aubrey Smith 7 points, and Kaili Crowl chipped in 5 points. Morgan Smailes led the Lady Indians with 18 points and her teammate McKennah Mullen finished the game with 7 points. Next up for Keyser (3-3) is a home game today vs Northern. Tipoff for the varsity is scheduled for 7:30PM.
