KEYSER- Midway through the 4th quarter the Golden Tornado trailed Mountain Ridge 14-13, but a 23 point explosion late in the 4th quarter gave Keyser a 36-14 victory and a berth into the W.Va. AA playoffs.

Keyser's Key To Victory

The Keyser offense had possession of the football with less than 7 minutes left in the 4th quarter and pounded the pigskin just shy of the 50 yard line. As time ticked off the clock, senior Captain Brady Ours put Keyser's playoff hopes in his hands, called his own number, then used his feet to scorch the Mountain Ridge defense for a 51 yard rushing touchdown. On the 2 point conversion Brady followed the blocking of his Offensive Line to punch in the PAT, giving Keyser a 7 point lead with 6 minutes remaining in the game. Still a 1 possession game, the Miners dialed up the play action pass, but Keyser's All-State Safety read the eyes of QB Alec Deremer and jumped the window to pick off his pass. Three plays later senior RB Christian Ravenscroft ripped around the right side of the formation and dashed 43 yards into the endzone to terminate the Miners bid for an upset.

Chronological Details From The Game

1st Quarter: Mountain Ridge received the opening kickoff and drove the ball down to the Keyser 32 yard line.  On 3rd down and 8, Miners QB #5 Alec Deremer had his pass tipped and DB #9 Ryan Shoemaker intercepted the football. The Golden Tornado offense took the field but failed to capitalize on the turnover as the drive went nowhere and resulted in a quick punt. Mountain Ridge did not allow the interception to impact their gameplan as they went back to the air attack. Keyser's defense gave up a long pass on 2nd down combined with a roughing the passer penalty, which kept the drive alive for the Miners and put the ball into Tornado territory. On the very next play, senior RB Tristan Pinto found a wide open lane off the left tackle and galloped untouched into the endzone. On the next possession for Keyser, they failed to produce any offense, and Mountain Ridge took over on their own 44 yard line. Once again the Miners did not hesitate to test the Keyser secondary. On first down QB Alec Deremer used play action to confuse the Keyser defense, then tossed a beautiful ball to #30 Tristan Pinto who was all alone deep down field and jogged into the endzone for a 56 yard TD. Mountain Ridge led 14-0 at the end of the 1st quarter.

2nd Quarter: Early in the 2nd quarter Keyser’s offense finally shook off their Halloween inspired zombie performance as Captain Brady Ours called his own number and busted through the Mountain Ridge defense for a 76 yard TD. The PAT was successful and with 10:18 left in the half Keyser trimmed the Miners lead to 7 points. Mountain Ridge went back to the air on their next possession but #11 Reggie Redman used his 6’3 frame to intercept the pigskin mid-flight. Keyser did not take long to pound the rock down the field and with 9:03 remaining in the half, Brady Ours punched the ball across the goal line for a 1 yard rushing TD.  The PAT went wide left to give the Miners a 1 point advantage 14-13.
Mountain Ridge apparently thought Reggie Redmans interception was fools gold, and they attacked him by air once again. It appeared the Mountain Ridge QB Alec Deremer let the ball slip out of his hands as he chucked up a duck allowing Reggie Redman to track it down for his 2nd interception of the half.  At the half: Keyser 13 - Mt. Ridge 14

3rd Quarter: Keyser received the ball to start the 2nd half but the team looked lethargic as the Miners defense quickly forced a punt. Mountain Ridge kept the ball on the ground driving to the Keyser 29 yard line but the defense stepped up on 3rd down as Shayden Daughtery sacked the QB to force a punt. The Golden Tornado started their next drive in the shadow of their own endzone, but the threat of a safety was quickly terminated as Drae Allen lowered his shoulder and busted through the Mountain Ridge Defensive Line for a big gain on the ground.  Keyser continued to rush the football and managed to cross the 50 yard line, however the drive stalled after a holding call nullified a Keyser first down in Miner territory.

4th Quarter: With less than 7 minutes remaining in the game and trailing by 1 point, it was imperative for the Golden Tornado to put together a scoring drive. Keyser started with the ball at their own 15 yard line and slowly started chipping away at the Mountain Ridge defense. With the ball just short of the 50 yard line, it was once again Ours Time To Shine as the Keyser QB took the snap, faked the handoff, then tucked the ball under his arm and turned on the jets for a 51 rushing TD. Keyser kept the ball in the hands of Ours to complete the 2 point conversion. Keyser led 21-14. Mountain Ridge was desperate for points and put the ball in the air, but All-State safety #40 picked off a pass which led to a Christian Ravenscroft rushing TD. Before time expired in the 4th quarter, Drae Allen scored a rushing TD to give the Golden Tornado a 36-14 victory.

Up Next: Mathematically Keyser has clinched a berth into the W.Va. AA playoffs. On Sunday November 5th, Keyser will find out their first round opponent and where the game will be played.
