The Mountain Ridge boys soccer team won the shootout over Brunswick and Altoona on Saturday at Mountain Ridge. The Miners first played Brunswick and won 4-0. They led 2-0 at halftime with both goals by Gavin Murray. The first goal was assisted by Brady Weimer at 19:12 and the second one was assisted by Alex Eichorn at 16:35. In the second half, the Miners came out with the same momentum scoring two more unanswered goals. The first goal was scored by Devin Smith which was assisted by Gavin Murray. With 28:51 left in the game, Tyler Bryant scored on a direct kick. The Miners led in shots 15-3 while Brunswick led in corner kicks 3-2. Brady Rounds made three saves in goal for Mountain Ridge while Brunswick’s goalie made five. The Miners also won in penalty kicks 5-2 with Rounds making one save. Later that evening, Mountain Ridge faced Altoona. The Miners lost 1-0 with Altoona scoring at 21:31 in the first half. The Miner’s failed to connect on all 20 of their shots. Mountain Ridge led in corner kicks 4-1 and both goalies had seven saves each. The Mountain Ridge boys finished the night by winning in penalty kicks 3-2 and Rounds making one save. The JV boys were also victorious yesterday beating Brunswick and Altoona. They beat Brunswick 2-0 with goals by Jacob Ritchie and Jarrett Pennington and an assist by Brayden Bowman. They also beat Altoona 3-1 with Justus LeProvost scoring two goals with Jacob Ritchie assisting him on the first one. Austin Robeson connected on a goal as well. Altoona’s goal was scored on a free kick. Josh Ravenscroft had two saves in each game for the Miners. Brunswick and Altoona names were unavailable for all games. The Miners next game is Tuesday against Northern at home.
The Mountain Ridge girls soccer team may have not won the shootout overall, but they came in close second. The Lady Miners started their Saturday off by playing Brunswick. The Lady Miners tied them 1-1. Raegan McKenzie scored a goal in the first half for the Miners at 10:04. In the second half, Brunswick came out and tied it with 12:39 left to play. Either team was unable to connect on another goal. The Lady Miners led in shots 7-5 and in corner kicks 3-2. Teresa Lambert had four saves for the Miners while the Brunswick goalie had six. The Lady Miners then lost to Brunswick in penalty kicks. The Miners faced Oakdale later that day. The first half was back and forth with a score of 0-0. Lady Miners head coach Gene Lescallette said “We needed to pass the ball a little more accurately and play together as a team. They were doing a good job, but had to rely on each other.” The Miners came out a different team in the second half scoring two goals on two assists. Loren McAlpine scored a goal on an assist from Grace Trenum just a couple minutes into the second half. At 15:55, Kate Baker scored a goal on an assist from Gabby White. The Lady Miners went on to win the game 2-0. The Miners led in shots 7-4 while Oakdale led in corner kicks 2-1. Teresa Lambert made four saves in goal for the Miners and Oakdale’s goalie made five. After the game, the Miners lost to Oakdale in penalty kicks. Brunswick went on to win the shootout. The Mountain Ridge JV girls also played yesterday in the shootout. They first beat Southern 2-0 with both goals by Madison Llewellyn on assists from Shannon Emerick and Lizzie Marchbank. Makayla Alexander had two saves in goal for the Lady Miners. The Lady Miners then faced Brunswick. Brunswick won 2-0 with one goal in each half. Lena Maffley and Makayla Alexander had five saves each for the Lady Miners and Brunswick’s goalie had two. Oakdale, Brunswick, and Southern names were unavailable for all games. The Lady Miners travel to Keyser on Monday with JV starting at 5:30 and Varsity starting at 7.
