SHORT GAP - The East Hardy Cougars behind the aerial attack of Senior Quarterback Clay Skovron, came into Falcon Stadium looking to spoil the Falcons home opener, and did just that coming away with a 38-13 victory over the Frankfort Falcons. After a 48-14 Week 1 victory over Harrison Central, the Cougars continued to keep it rolling.
SHORT GAP - The East Hardy Cougars behind the aerial attack of Senior Quarterback Clay Skovron, came into Falcon Stadium looking to spoil the Falcons home opener, and did just that coming away with a 38-13 victory over the Frankfort Falcons. After a 48-14 in Week 1 victory over Harrison Central, the Cougars continued to keep it rolling.
Frankfort, starting at their own 35 after the opening short kick that went out of bounds, wanting to put their physical play to use, put together nice runs by running backs Dalton Pollock and Nick Marley, while being aided by a facemask penalty setting up the Falcons with excellent field position. A 4th and 7 attempt from the Cougars 36 came up short, leading to a turnover on downs.
East Hardy gaining possession off the turnover on downs, the Cougars Clay Skovron connected with Jeffrey Mills for 28 yards however Frankfort’s relentless defensive pressure caused the drive to stall forcing the Cougars to punt. Frankfort’s 2nd possession started at their own 17, after failing to get the offense going, a punt followed. On the first play of the Cougars next drive, Clay Skovron connected with Jeffrey Mills once again for a 35 yard completion, 2 plays later Skovron finds Brett Tharp for a 9 yard touchdown, PAT good 4:54 left in the first quarter East Hardy 7-Frankfort 0. Following the East Hardy touchdown, another short kick provided the Falcons with excellent field position at their own 41, on 3rd and 9 Quarterback Wyatt Yates was intercepted by Brett Tharp giving the Cougars field position at their own 35. Continuing the aerial attack, on 3rd and goal from the Falcon 3 yard line as the 1st quarter was expiring, running back Phillip Mullin took the half back option and threw a touchdown pass to Brett Tharp, PAT good East Hardy 14-Frankfort 0
Frankfort started from their own 25, having a hard time gaining offensive momentum were forced to a 3 and out and a punt.
After a short punt, East Hardy took possession at the Frankfort 43.
On the first play from scrimmage Clay Skovron once again connected with Brett Tharp down the left sideline for a 43 yard touchdown, the 2 point conversion was fumbled by Clay Skovron however the fumble was recovered by the offense in the end zone for the conversion, with 9:37 remaining in the 2nd quarter the Cougars lead was 22-0.
Frankforts next possession starting at their own 24, Wyatt Yates found receiver Logan Crock for a 15 yard gain, a pass interference call aided the Falcon drive however on 2nd and 4 Wyatt Yates was intercepted in the redzone by Chance Dove and returned to their own 23.
On the first play of the Cougars next drive, running back Phillip Mullin took the carry off left tackle for a 77 yard touchdown run, PAT good with 4:46 left in the 2nd quarter East Hardy 29-Frankfort-0.
The ensuing possession from their own 35 Frankfort’s Nick Marley busted through the line with a 15 yard carry to midfield to gain momentum however on 4th and 1 from the East Hardy 41 the Cougars defense held strong and forced the turnover on downs.
With the ball at their own 40 the aerial attack continued as the Cougars put together another successful drive that was capped off with :32 left in the half as Skovron connected with Brett Tharp once again for a 10 yard touchdown, the PAT was no good as the halftine score was East Hardy 35-Frankfort 0.
Returning the second half kickoff to their own 42, the Cougars put together a good looking drive however Frankfort defense rose to the occasion forcing a punt and touchback.
The Falcons first drive of the second half started at their own 20, with the offense still trying to find their offensive groove, fumbled the pitch and losing possession giving East Hardy the ball at midfield.
After a few possessions of some great defensive play by both sides, Frankfort put together one their best drives of the night and were aided by 2 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties against East Hardy extending the Falcon drive.
With 2:12 left in the third quarter Dalton Pollock put the Falcons on the board with a 1 yard touchdown run. PAT good, East Hardy 35-Frankfort 7. East Hardy’s next drive was successful as Aden Funkhouser nailed a 34 yard field goal extending the score to 38-7 with 1:12 left in the third quarter.
East Hardys defense stood strong as it had all game, after a stop forcing the Falcons to punt, East Hardys Brett Tharp cut his way thru the Frankfort punt team for an 85 yard punt return touchdown however the return was negated due to a clipping penalty and few plays later quarterback Clay Skovron was intercepted by Logan Crock who has interceptions in consecutive weeks.
After unsportsmanlike conduct and facemask penalties on East Hardy, with 6:40 remaining, Falcon running back Nick Marley took the carry off tackle 44 yards for the final touchdown of the night, PAT no good. East Hardy 38-Frankfort 13.
East Hardy (2-0) will take on Wheeling Central Catholic while Frankfort (1-1) will look to get back in the win column while traveling to Robert C. Byrd.
