BRIDGEPORT - Rain ... The nemesis of baseball players and sports writers everywhere. A mini-monsoon hit West Virginia Friday afternoon which forced this American Legion elimination game between Romney Post 91 and Bridgeport Post 68 to be delayed until Saturday afternoon. The big question leading into todays game; Would the rain delay help this team gain some rest and fight off fatigue, or, would the rain cool off the bats offensively?
On Saturday afternoon the skies began to clear, and it also became clear Romney's starting pitcher Wyatt Yates was on point. Yates looked great on the mound holding Bridgeport Post 68 without a hit through the first 4 innings.
Apparently the rain did cool off the Post 91 offense as the team went hitless in the first two innings, however there were signs of life in the bottom of the third inning. With 2 outs, Romney was able to load the bases, but Bridgeport escaped without giving up a run.
In the top of the fourth inning, Wyatt Yates continued to puzzle Post 68 batters, which opened up the opportunity for Romney to grab a lead. In the bottom of the 4th inning Keyser's Jesse Smith ignited the Post 91 hitting machine by smacking a single then Cam White and Foster Conis were walked to load the bases. With ducks on the pond Zach Whitacre took advantage of a 3-0 count and crushed a single to knock in 2 runs for Romney. Wyatt Yates stepped up to the plate and hit a single to score another run for Post 91.
Leading 3-0, Wyatt continued to hold Bridgeport scoreless through the 5th but Romney was unable to add any runs in the bottom half of the inning. In the top of the 6th inning Zach Musgrove of Bridgeport finally ended the scoring draught for Bridgeport by hitting a solo home run. Later in the inning Post 68 added another run with a single by Will Pitzer.
John Ackerman replaced Yates on the mound in the 7th inning and Post 68 took advantage of 2 walks and 2 errors to take a 4-3 lead. Romney continued to battle offensively but could not manage to squeeze out another run giving Bridgeport Post 68 the victory.
Zack Whitacre finished the game with 1 hit and 2 RBI, while Wyatt Yates had 1 hit and 1 RBI. John Ackerman, Brett Whiteman, Foster Conis, and Jesse Smith each added 1 hit for Romney.
Looking at the game statistically, in a tight game it is tough for any team to overcome 5 errors, especially against good competition. Also another glaring statistic was the lack of hits for Romney as nobody on the roster had multiple hits.
Perhaps a quote by Yogi Berra best sums up the results for Romney Post 91,"We made too many wrong mistakes." Yogi Berra
