SHORT GAP--Frankfort pulled off the win over Southern Garrett in overtime Tuesday night, keeping the game close throughout before coming back in the fourth and prevailing by a 63-58 final.
Garett Weaver and Zach Whitacre each had 18 for the Falcons, with another 11 from Brett Whiteman and 10 from Jansen Knotts. Logan Hinebaugh led the Rams with 17, while Sam Friend hit five threes to finish with 15 points in the loss.
A close first quarter gave way to a 7-2 run for Southern to give them a six point lead--the largest lead for either team all game--before Frankfort rallied back, taking the lead on a three from Whitacre with 31 seconds left in the period. Sam Friend would put the last points on the board to head to the second quarter, though, with a half-court heave finding the basket to put the Rams back up 15-13 through the end of the first quarter.
The lead continued to seesaw, changing hands six times in the next eight minutes, before a turnaround jumper from Whitacre tied things up at 24 heading to halftime. He converted a steal into a layup to open the third quarter to put the Falcons back up, but a 7-1 run gave the lead back to
Southern, and with under a minute to go a layup and free throw from Hinebaugh--fouling out Carter Houdersheldt before the third quarter was even over--pushed the Ram advantage back up to six points. Frankfort whittled it back down to 42-38 by the horn, however, and carried that momentum forward as they went on an 11-2 run to take the lead 49-46 on a three from Weaver with 4:35 to go. The lead was at four with two minutes to go when Friend hit a pair of clutch threes within 18 seconds to flip the lead back to Southern, but Knotts hit a layup to tie the game with 1:10 to go, and despite two timeouts from the Rams, a lot of ball-holding, and one hot shooter in Sam Friend, the game remained tied and headed to overtime.
A three from Weaver gave the Falcons the early lead, but a pair of layups from Will Baker gave the lead back to Southern yet again, 58-57 with 1:45 to go. These would be their only points of the extra frame, going cold while Weaver hit a pair of free throws and dished to Parker Riley for a game-icing layup in the final seconds.
Southern fared much better in the early game, with the Rams prevailing 49-26. Tyler Rodeheaver led all scorers with 16, with 11 points coming from Brandon McClung and 10 from Justin Shaffer. Caleb Hare led the Falcons with 11 points.
Hampshire awaits Frankfort next, with the Trojans visiting Short Gap Friday night.
