MOOREFIELD - The Keyser boys basketball team stormed the Moorefield gymnasium Tuesday night and held on to beat the Yellow Jackets 65-59. The key to victory for the Golden Tornado was the first quarter as they benefitted from using a full court press, which turned into 24 points. Keyser converted on six 3 pointers, three from Andrew Liller, two from Cam White, and one from Cade Staggers in the first eight minutes of play.

We wanted to get out to a fast start so we utilized the full court press to start the game. Coach John Haines Jr.

To start the second quarter Keyser was leading 24-8, but Moorefield was determined to make a comeback as they picked up the intensity defensively. Keyser only scored 9 points in the second quarter while Moorefield was able to drop 18 points, which gave the Golden Tornado a slight 33-26 lead at halftime.

The Yellow Jackets benefitted from a shift in Keyser’s defensive scheme, which switched out of the full court press and simply went to a man-to-man half court defense. The third quarter started in fantastic fashion for Keyser as they jumped out to a 15 point lead (49-34), which was highlighted by Cade Staggers who completed the rare 4 point play. At the 4:00 minute mark the momentum shifted back to Moorefield as Keyser failed to score a point for the rest of the quarter, allowing the Yellow Jackets to trim the lead down to 6 points (49-43). The juice was still flowing for Moorefield to start the fourth quarter as they trimmed the lead down to 1 point (50-49) with 4:55 left in the game. A timeout was taken by Keyser to regain composure and step up defensively which is exactly what happened.

The play of the game happened late in the fourth quarter as the Yellow Jackets attempted a three point shot, Reggie Redman came out of nowhere and viciously rejected a shot that brought applause from the Keyser fans. The Golden Tornado had the potential wrap up a win with two minutes left in regulation, but poor free throw shooting in the fourth quarter (58%) going 7 for 12 from the charity stripe kept Moorefield in the game. Luckily the Yellow Jackets failed to convert a 3 point shot in the fourth quarter which eventually sealed the victory for the Golden Tornado.

Cam White led the way with 19 points, while three point specialist Andrew Liller finished with 15 points including four 3 pointers. Cade Staggers had a great game shooting the basketball finishing with 14 points, going a perfect 3 for 3 from the charity stripe. Reggie Redman and Dylan Thorne were great defensively and both finished the game with 7 points. Jacob Hanlin became a crowd favorite as he told the Moorefield bench to hush as he converted both of his free throw shots. Devonte Johnson was a key attribute on the defensive side of the basketball especially when Keyser played a full court press.

Four Moorefield players finished in double digits with Drake Baker scoring 14 points, DJ Zerk finished with 12 points, while Garrett Haggerty and Jake Ours dropped in 13 points.

Next up for Keyser (10-10) is a revenge game at home against Southern Garrett on February 17th. In the previous matchup, Southern escaped with a 59-57 last second victory in Oakland, Md.
