DARE grads know: Drugs can rob your future
Editor's note: The following essay was written as part of the DARE program for fifth-grade students at Keyser Primary Middle School.
Would you rather go to college and get a fantastic job or go to jail?
I would rather go to college and get a fantastic job! DARE is so cool. It is a great program that helps kids like me learn about harmful bad habits that can become addictions. I learned about what to do and what not to do in my future. I learned about drugs, tobacco and alcohol, and how they can harm our bodies and cause us many problems. Lung cancer is one of the many diseases that you can get from smoking, and it causes your breath to stink.
Your growth can be stunted and you also could experience memory loss.
I know that I will never take harmful drugs, drink any kind of alcohol, or smoke either.
I know that doing drugs and doing bad stuff like that can cause death. You could go to jail because these harmful substances cause people to think differently than they usually do.
Doing things like these will not help me be the kind of person I want to be when I grow up. I want to set a better example to others. I want to get an awesome job when I grow up, so I need to do the right things and take good care of my body, so that I can think clearly, learn a lot and get a great education. When I commit to myself to be harmful-substance free, I can and will become everything I need and want to become.
My pledge: I pledge to be drug free and violence free and to the right thing always, being a good example to those around me.
