Pledging to stay drug, violence free through DARE
Editor's note: The following essay was written as part of the DARE program for fifth-grade students at  Keyser Primary Middle School.
I have learned a lot of things this year in the DARE program. Something I learned about marijuana is that it's illegal in the United States. I also learned that smoking can cause heart disease. Something else I didn't know was, it was very dangerous and can kill you mixing alcohol and medicine. When you drink alcohol it will go directly into your bloodstream and increase your risk of diseases.
I'm glad I was in the DARE program this year. The DARE program makes me aware of the causes of drug use. This year in the DARE program, I heard a lot of interesting stories from Sheriff Fraley. I learned a lot of new things in DARE this year. I never knew how dangerous drugs could be until Sheriff Fraley taught me about drug abuse.
It's important to be drug free and avoid violence. One reason is you will be healthier. You also should not try to talk your friends into smoking because they might get really sick if they listen to you. I don't want to smoke because I would die, plus it is expensive to buy cigarettes.
Another thing I don't want to do is use marijuana because I don't want to go to jail.
I also don't want to drink alcohol either because I don't want to get drunk.
I will absolutely not do drugs, because it's bad for you and it'll kill you. Something else I will not do is mix alcohol with medicine. I also will not use marijuana because I will go to jail if I get caught. Smoking can also cause heart disease and lung cancer, plus the cigarettes are expensive. Chewing tobacco is bad for you also and can give you jaw cancer. I'm very glad Sheriff Fraley taught us how bad drugs really are.
I pledge to stay drug free and avoid violence to the best of my ability for the rest of my life.
