KEYSER, W.Va. -

To the Editor:

My home was recently damaged in a fire.
How our community responded  is something Keyser should be proud of. I, for one, am immeasurably  appreciative of efforts on my behalf.
From the first 911 call to the rapid response by firefighters, police, and emergency medical personnel, our First Responders worked together superbly.
Our own Keyser Volunteer Fire Co. 33 was first on the scene to combat the fire before irreparable damage occurred or adjacent homes were damaged.
McCoole and Fountain units were dispatched in support.
While no people were injured, our brave firefighters saved my dogs trapped inside, and carried them all to safety.
Where do we find such people?
Behind the mask and under the helmet, you find our neighbors and friends, risking their own lives   for us.
I just wish it didn’t take a fire to burn that appreciation so deeply into my soul. When fire strikes, ‘33’ is Keyser’s luckiest number. Thanks, Firefighters!
Veterinarian Dr. John Gustafson, DVM rushed to the scene that night  as my precious old dogs were provided emergency oxygen by our EMS,  using animal respirator masks ironically provided as a community service project a couple of years ago by hi daughter, Juliane.
That equipment made a difference as dogs were stabilized and transported to the Hi-Rock Animal Hospital for treatment.
Dr. Gustafson had his veterinary staff on hand to work with him through the night to provide critical care.  Two of my senior Basset Hounds, eeyore and Piglet continue to receive treatment at the animal hospital.
His professional training and experience greatly reduced animal suffering and was instrumental in saving as many lives as possible.
Dr. Gustafson, his wife, and technicians worked wonders and treated me with caring and compassion.
Thanks, Doc, more than words can say.
Tails wag happily because of you!
Please don’t wait until a fire makes you into a ‘true believer’ in fire safety.
The support and generosity of so many people made this adversity survivable.
As I rebuild, and forever thereafter,
I hold an appreciation and pride in how my community responded.
Thanks, Keyser!
