Our youth today don't even know about the bar their ancestors raised for them to give them their places in life today. If they never know there's a bar and they're required participants to keep this bar raised high, they will continue to let it fall.
Our youth today must know they didn't just arrive; that their current places in life weren't just handed to them. These places were brought to them by blood, sweat, tears, tragedy and triumphs from people they never knew. But know them they must. Study them, learn from them, and appreciate them, they must.
It's only through knowing their past and the slim chance of not existing that our youth will appreciate the lives, freedoms and allowances they have today. Although they are a "Give me and I deserve generation," they will not be filled with the proper characteristics to lead correctly when it's their time. Sure, they can lead, but we're talking about leading correctly!
A person can only give what's inside of them. If character isn't found within our youth, they won't be able to give it, live their lives by it and lead others with it. They'll continue to be a selfish generation thinking only of themselves, their own needs and seeking wealth to obtain material objects; instead of using it to help others.
While we live, we must show them the way. We must be the ones to enlighten them and to open their eyes to the struggles of the past. For it’s in these struggles that produced strong character, morals and values in our ancestors. Absent of struggles in our lives, we become weak and unfocused.
This is why we must look back to the deeds, sacrifices, mistakes and triumphs of our ancestors to learn appreciation, respect and admiration for a people who survived through unspeakable odds to give us the breath we breathe today. We owe them our respect, our allegiance and our commitment to continue life as they started it; to place others before ourselves.
Our ancestors raised the invisible bar for life and survival very high. They couldn't be content with being good or mediocre. They had to be exceptional and extraordinary people! It was the only way they could survive and thrive in the times in which they lived. It was the only way they were afforded opportunities to care for their families.
Today, our youth have taken the liberty of vast opportunities for granted. It's caused a shift in their thinking and work ethics. They've been given so much so freely, they've developed a mentality of expecting, rather than working with effort to receive. They've taken the easy road. They've had children and expect their parents to raise them. They don't venture out on their own seeking to establish a life for themselves and their future families, but are content to live at home with Mom and Dad.
This will only hinder their development, growth and character. They'll be ill prepared for the positions required of them to lead in the future. Their children and grandchildren will pay the awful price for their lack of development and character. A generation is only as good as the ones who've gone before them. If such a generation is absent of struggles in their lifetime, they must use wisdom and look back and learn from the generations that had them.
They must take these lesson with them and apply them to their characters. They must teach their children and their grandchildren of such struggles to build strong moral centers within them.
They must teach them of the invisible bar our ancestors raised for them to give them the nice lives they enjoy today. They must teach them to take their positions on this bar with the obligation of their hands reached high over their heads, grasping this bar to keep it raised high.
The generations behind them will thank them. If not, they will curse them for their lack of effort and for not making the choice to invest into their lives and their futures!
