Founders would mourn health care bill
Editor's note: The following letter was written to Sen. Robert Byrd and submitted to the News-Tribune for publication:
Honorable Senator Byrd,
It was with great interest that I observed your picture on the front of the Washington Post. The great things you have accomplished, your tenure in the US Senate, the wonderful individual you have been, a man of principled character and integrity. You should be ashamed of your vote for the health care legislation. We have been made aware of the deals  Senators made to ensure their votes.
We are also aware that some Senate rules have been violated. I am not smart enough to understand these rules. I however, cannot understand how a man with your intimate knowledge of the US Senate and the great institution it was, be a party to this, and vote for a bill that takes away a huge part of our individual liberties and freedoms, and quite frankly the majority of Americans and West Virginians do not want.
I have taken the liberty to copy the scriptures that you have posted on your website:
Religious faith, patriotism, family, respect for authority, hard work, and honesty were the building blocks of our communities, our state, and our nation. They must continue to be the building blocks of our future. The Bible says: "Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set." (Proverbs 22:28) These "old values" include our Divine duty to be good stewards of God's creation. The Scripture tells us: "The earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof..." (Psalm 24:1) And, one of my favorite passages reads: "[S]tand still, and consider the wondrous works of God." (Job 37:14)
A bill that takes over our healthcare, our freedom to choose, and our ability to decide what is best for our families, surely does not reflect "Religious faith, patriotism, family, hard work, and honesty that you believe in.
If you truly believe Proverbs 22:28, how can you not believe that our Founding Fathers would certainly be wondering what happened to the "Ancient Landmarks" that they established around 230 years ago. Most certainly their hearts would be heavy.
Respectfully,
Jeffrey Hartman
