The Keyser High School football team did its part Friday night in branding Tornado Alley as its field of glory, delivering a thrilling, last-minute victory over a heavily favored, undefeated Allegany High team.
Now it's the community's turn to do its part to help tie up the loose ends and pay the still-hefty unpaid bills for the stadium's construction.
The Campaign for Keyser High School continues to raise funds to pay for the athletic complex, an endowed-fund scholarship and an operational endowment.
The Campaign set out to raise $100,000, and at this point is about $30,000 away from reaching that goal.
At the high school, teachers and staff have taken a lead in fundraising, with a highlight of the effort the naming of a scholarship in honor of Janet C. Kalbaugh, longtime KHS guidance counselor. Certainly, the community has done its part as well, especially in light of the volunteer effort that saw retirees and others working at the stadium almost every day in the final weeks to get the facility ready.
Everyone involved would like to declare victory and get on with building new memories atop the strong foundation laid Friday night, but the reality is that more must still be done.
As Trina Melody, a member of the Campaign for Keyser High School’s Executive Eommittee, noted in a recent letter to the editor, “We need the financial support of all Keyser community friends, alumni, parents, grandparents, businesses, students, civic groups, and future students in order to retire the debt. Then finally, Keyser High School will have a beautiful athletic facility that will be available for generations to come.”
The greater Keyser community – God bless you, everyone – has driven the ball across the field to the 30 yard line, just shy of the red zone. The same team effort that got Tornado Alley this far, will push the ball across the goal-line.
But it won't happen unless we all pitch in and do our part.
