Latoya Buckner and Cara Thompson each scored 20 points and Hagerstown Community College took advantage of a big night at the free throw line to beat the Potomac State Lady Catamounts, 85-78, in the first round of the Region XX Tournament on Friday afternoon at Frederick Community College.
Potomac State had a shooting night that would win most games, but the Lady Cats couldn’t overcome the big disparity at the charity stripe.
Hagerstown converted on 13-of-17 free throws while Potomac State went just 4-for-7.
Potomac State shot an incredible 76 percent from the field, hitting on 28-of-38 two-pointers and 6-of-7 from 3-point range.
Amanda McKim poured in a game-high 33 points to lead Potomac State. She hit on 12-of-15 two-pointers and went 3-for-3 from three-point range.
Hagerstown held a 31-30 lead at the half and tried to blow the game open in the second half, but Potomac State rallied from double-digit deficits on three separate occasions to tie the game each time.
But the Lady Cats, who had two players play all 40 minutes, eventually ran out of gas and were forced to foul inside the 2-minute mark, and Hagerstown iced the game from the free throw line.
Denise Johnson had 16 points for Potomac State, while Maddie Crosby added 11 points and Ashley Heavener led the team with 6 rebounds.
Teonna Jule had 18 points for Hagerstown.
With the loss, Potomac State wraps up its season at 17-10.
