Did  you see our new page on Saturday?
We here at your hometown daily newspaper are really excited about the new “Worship and Praise” page which debuted on Page 2B of the News Tribune on Saturday, June 11.
Page 2B has been the location of the Face Off column for approximately 2 ½ years. It was a good feature, and drew a lot of comments from our readers over that time period.
The “point/counterpoint” type column had a good run, and we would like to thank the writers – Kent Moreno, Stephen Smoot, and Charlie Meyer - who contributed to its success from the beginning.
All good things, however, must come to an end, and the editorial board felt it was time to retire Face Off and move in a different direction.
And so we decided to offer something completely different and provide the opportunity for our local houses of worship to showcase who they are and what makes them unique.
My sincere thanks to Pastor Greg Hammond at the First Assembly of God in Westernport  for working with me to put together the inaugural edition of the new page.  I think it turned out very well, and I am looking forward to seeing how other churches in the area will put together their version of the page.
And that is exactly what it is designed to be – a vehicle for each individual church to share with our readers who they are and what they have to offer.
The idea is simple – Local pastors will submit information about themselves and their church – simply by following  the example of last Saturday’s page. The pastor profile consists of each individual pastor’s answers to the extremely brief questionnaire, and the copy about the church can include history, mission statement, opportunities to become involved … whatever you would like for our readers to know about your church.
We need around 850-900 words for the main story. That may initially seem like a lot, but believe me, when you start talking about something you believe in, those words fly pretty fast!
We also want a photo of the pastor and the church. If you don’t have a photo, we can take one.
We are currently working up a schedule so we know we have profiles coming for at least the next few weeks. So please, if you would like to profile your church, give me a call at 304-788-3333 and we’ll get you on the schedule.
We are looking forward to hearing from you and sharing your good news with our readers!

In a bit of a follow up to my column last week on the absence of the Mineral County Board of Education from the teachers’ retirement dinner: I received two emails from retired teachers informing me that previous board members also did not attend their retirement dinners and, furthermore, they were not really expected to attend.
In addition, newly-elected board member Laura Courrier made it a point at the last board meeting to note that she had a prior engagement and could not attend the retirement dinner. The other members said nothing about the questions raised in my column.
I’m sorry, but whether it has been tradition for them to attend or not, I still think it is disrespectful for the board members to not be in attendance to pay their respects to those who have dedicated so much of their lives to educating our children.
And it is understandable that busy people like Ms. Courrier might have another engagement. However, Ms. Courrier is one of five members.
Shouldn’t they have at least put their heads together and decided one of them should attend and represent the whole?
It would be the right thing to do.
