Eleanor Ann "Lea" Spanburgh, 81, of Burlington, WV, died Thursday, January 12, 2012 at the Blue Ridge Hospice in Winchester, VA.
Born on May 21, 1930 in Jersey City, NJ, she was a daughter of the late Conrad and Anna Markert. She also was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 34 years, Robert G. Spanburgh on November 10, 1984.
Upon retiring to West Virginia in 1980 with her husband, Lea became an active member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Romney, WV. She retired from the Burlington Library where she worked diligently with the Friend of the Burlington Library to transform the library into a vibrant and flourishing community resource. She was loved by all who knew her and was known for her selfless attitude and general acts of kindness towards everyone. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Surviving are her four children, Nancy McGuigan and husband Warren of Mt. Airy, MD, Carol Law and husband Michael of Huntingtown, MD, Robert Spanburgh, Jr. and wife Janis of Port Republic, MD and Scott Spanburgh and wife Nina of Keyser, WV. She was revered by nine grandchildren, Michelle Hernandez of Frederick, MD, Stephanie Law of St. Leonard, MD, Michael Law of Port Republic, Jason McGuigan of Frederick, Christopher Law of Sunderland, MD, Lacey Spanburgh of Ocean City, MD, Katelyn Spanburgh of Prince Frederick, MD, Jesse Spanburgh of Port Republic and Skylar Spanburgh of Keyser and one great-grandson, Carson Law.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Burlington Chapel, on Sunday, January 15, 2012 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. A Christian Wake Service with Rosary will be recited at the funeral home on Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Romney, on Monday, January 16, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Joseph Augustine as celebrant.
Interment will be in the Arnold Cemetery, Junction, WV.
The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to either Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 299 School Street, Romney, WV 26757, Friends of the Burlington Library, Patterson Creek Road, Burlington, WV 26710 or to the Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork Street, Suite 405, Winchester, VA 22601.
