KEYSER, W.Va. -

Virginia Lee (Scheermesser) Hartman, 86, of Keyser, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at the Memorial Campus of the WMHS, Cumberland, MD.
Born on April 29, 1922 at Cumberland, MD, she was a daughter of the late Raymond and Winifred Justine (Knott) Scheermesser. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Ray Hartman on July 17, 1998 and by a son-in-law, Junior Dawson.
Mrs. Hartman was a May 1940 graduate of Piedmont High School in Piedmont, WV.  For numerous years, she worked in the Mineral County Sheriff's Office as a tax deputy under five different sheriffs.
Since acrylic painting was an enjoyment of hers, her talent of painting was artistically revealed when she decorated the windows of the sheriff's office during the Christmas season by painting religious Christmas scenes directly upon the windowpanes to the pleasure of passersby. Another pleasure and talent of hers was in creating beautiful and realistic floral design of iced cakes for different occasions for family members. She enjoyed designing and sewing banners for projects within the family of the church to then be displayed upon the walls of the sanctuary, but she especially enjoyed participating in mission work of the church and in many other church projects with her late husband.
During the summer months that she and her husband vacationed in Delaware to deep-sea fish, she had cherished memories shared with him of which she often spoke.
Mrs. Hartman was a member of the Keyser Presbyterian Church where she served as mission chairperson, women's circle chairperson as well as being a choir member for many years.
Surviving are three daughters, Anna Lee Wilkes and husband Ron, Winnie Dawson and Virginia Raye Biddle and husband James, all of Keyser; three brothers, Austin Scheermesser of Virginia, Justin Scheermesser and wife Glen Dean of Keyser and Edward Scheermesser and wife Cindy of Westernport, MD; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Friday, August 15 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m.
A funeral service and Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be celebrated at the Keyser Presbyterian Church on Saturday, August 16 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Ernest Lee Poland, Jr. officiating. Friends may also call at the church one hour prior to the service.
