DUMFRIES, Va -

John Carroll “Bootsie” Johnston, age 80, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at his residence in Dumfries, Va. Mr. Johnson was born July 21, 1927 in Keyser, West Virginia and was the son of the late Jon and Katherine (Chrisman) Johnston. He was proceeded in death by a sister, Evon Johnston Ford.
John enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he reenlisted in the U.S. Air Force and spent over 28 years in the military. He attended Potomac State College and graduated from George Mason University in 1974 and majored in early childhood education. John was a great grandson of the late Rev. John C. Johnston, a native of Ireland and the first minister of Keyser Presbyterian Church in 1854.
He taught for Prince William County Public Schools for 13 years. After retiring from teaching, he worked at the Prince William Marina for over 15 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post #28 and Fairfax Jubilaires and Bull Run and the Troubadours Barbership Singers.
Survivors include his wife, Tina Johnston of Montclair; three daughters, Katherine and Allison Johnston, both of Montclair, Va. and Kim Johnston of Charlottesville, Va. Virginia Lee Kooken (aunt), Westernport, Md; Julie Ford Kerico (niece), Sterling Park, Va.; nephews Danny Ford, Sterling Park, Va. and Barry Ford, Leesburg, Va. and Browne Lee Kooken (cousin), Upper Marlboro, Md.
The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at The Mountcastle Funeral Home in Dale City, Va.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Robert Edmunds 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2008 at the First United Methodist Presbyterian Church of Dale City, Va. The Internment followed at Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle, Va.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Woodbridge Relay for Life Foundation, 12179 Abbey Glen Court, Woodbridge, Virginia 22192.
