Hanford William White, 95, a resident of Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home, formerly of Burlington, WV and Hepzibah, WV, died Saturday, May 10, 2008 at the nursing home.
Born on July 17, 1912 at Glen Falls, WV, he was a son of the late Edward and Lora (Washburn) White. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma E. (Pitzer) White on May 1, 1998; seven brothers, James, Carl, Walter, Paul, Jack, Harry and Clarence White and two sisters, Ruth Cowgill and Naomi Lafferty.
Mr. White was a retired coal miner having worked for 33 years in the mines. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the U.S.S. Colorado in the Pacific. He was also a member of Meuse-Argonne Post # 573, VFW, Clarksburg, WV and Local # 1501, U.M.W.A. in Shinnston, WV.
Surviving are one son, Gary W. White, Sheriff of Mineral County and his wife Patty of Burlington; three grandchildren, Gary W. White, II of Salem, WV, Patricia Dawn White of Clarksburg and Jennifer Simpson of Burlington; eight great-grandchildren and one sister, Alice Stokes of New Brockton, Alabama.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Burlington Chapel, on Monday, May 12 from 7-9 p.m. and on Tuesday, May 13 for one hour prior to the services.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Burlington Chapel, on Tuesday, May 13 at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Roger Leatherman officiating.
Private interment will be in the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery, Shinnston, WV.
The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the American Cancer Society, 182 N. Mechanic Street, Cumberland, MD  21502.
