Dolores Simpson
KEYSER – Dolores M. “Dougie” Simpson, 67, of Rt. 1, Keyser, WV, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, at her residence, after a courageous 26-month battle with cancer.
Born on April 13, 1942 in Cumberland, MD, she was a daughter of the late Virgil T. “Mickey” Welsh and Norma Grace (Fortney) Welsh. She also was preceded in death by her stepmother, Martha A. “Mary” Welsh Kephart.
Mrs. Simpson was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She was a 1960 graduate of Keyser High School and formerly worked as a Mary Kay consultant. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women of the church, where she served as treasurer for many years. She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fountain Volunteer Fire Department and was a member and past president of the former Fountain Elementary School PTA. She was also a member of Alkire Chapter #10, Order of the Eastern Star, Keyser, and served as a den mother to Cub Scout Pack #34. Dougie was also instrumental in having the torch placed at Potomac State College at the outset of the Iraq War, “Desert Storm,” to honor all of the troops who were there in combat, and to serve as a lasting symbol until those troops could return home.
Surviving are her husband of 48 years, George H. Simpson Sr.; her special companion, her Toy Dachsund, “Koda;” three sons, Gene H. Simpson Jr. of Keyser, Thomas L. Simpson and wife Jennifer of Burlington, WV, and Toby L. Simpson and wife Melissa of Keyser; one daughter, Christie K. Whisner and husband Jeremy of Akron, OH; one sister, Susan K. Pifer of Chambersburg, PA; and eight grandchildren: Kaitlyn,, Kailee and Kolton Simpson, TJ Simpson, Carlie, Breanna and Ashlyn Whisner and Jesse Simpson.
The family will receive friends at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Monday, March 1, 2010, and on Tuesday, March 2, 2010, from 6-9 p.m. both days. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open on Tuesday after 9 a.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Grace United Methodist Church on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 3 p.m. with Rev. James A. McCune officiating. Friends may also call at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Telephone Ministry at Grace United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 40, Keyser, WV 26726.
