Burlie F. Alt, 90,of Fort Ashby, WV, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 19, 2008.
Born February 14,1918 in Petersburg, WV, Burlie was the son of the late William M. and Ida C. Alt. He was the eldest of eight children and was preceded in death by three brothers: infant Johnny Alt, Raymond Ault, and Elvin Alt; and two sisters: Arlena Weaver and Rosalie Lofton; and one beloved grandson, Freddie Ault.
Survivors include his wife if seventy-one years, Rachel J. (Martin) Alt; two
sisters, Mary Scott, and husband Tommy, Petersburg, and Lucy Shifflett, and husband Emmett, Baltimore, MD; three children, Tina Jackson, Raymond E. Ault, and wife, Della, and Carole Abe, and husband, Richard, all of Fort Ashby. Mr. Alt is also survived by six grandchildren: Sheila Law, Oxon Hill, MD, Debra Law, Fort Ashby, Karen Lee and husband, Joe, Fort Ashby, Raymond Ault, Jr., and wife Grace, Capon Bridge, Tena Abe, Fort Ashby, and Shelly Cunningham and husband, Wayne, Poulan, GA; three great, grandsons, Jared Ault, Justin Lee, and Steven Whitacre; four great, granddaughters, RaeChell Catlett, Chrystal Robinette, Casey Haines, and Skyler Malone; eight great, great, grandsons, and one great, great, granddaughter.
Mr. Alt began his career during World War II, serving with the CC Camp at Droop
Mountain, WV. He worked at the Celanese in Cumberland, MD, and was a member of the Carpenter and Millwright Union, Local #1024. Burlie established a home construction business, A&A Builders, with Carl Abe and developed Furnace Acres housing development. He and his son, Raymond, formed Burlie Alt and Son Builders, which later became Thermal Homes, Inc.
Mr. Alt was a member of the Community Bible Assembly of God Church, Springfield. He was also a member of the Fort Ashby Lions Club, Clinton Lodge #86, A.F. & A.M., and was Chairman of the Public Service District in Fort Ashby. Burlie was awarded the “Outstanding Ambassador of Public Service Award” by James Manchin in 1982 for his works in establishing the water and sewage systems in the town of Fort Ashby.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Inc, Route 28, Fort Ashby,
(1-888-724-2251) on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM.
The funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Tuesday at 1:00 PM, with the Rev. Norman Landis, officiating.
Interment will be in Fort Ashby Cemetery, where Masonic rites will be accorded by
