Crews from the Keyser Water Department waded into New Creek on Monday morning to clear out the carcasses of a half-dozen butchered deer that had been thrown into the stream about a mile above the city’s water-supply intake pipe.
Reporting the incident at the Monday meeting of the mayor and city council, Councilman William “Sonny” Rhodes said the deer had been partially butchered then dumped in the water.
“They had a nasty job going out and getting them,” Rhodes said of the crew.
Rhodes said Keyser City Police were informed of the incident, which occurred outside city limits, in the area behind the Pizza Hut. The Department of Natural Resources was also notified.
City officials said the deer posed no threat to the city’s treated water supply.
In addition to the incident in New Creek, Rhodes said several deer were found shot dead at Dam 14, with the deer not butchered at all and left on the breast of the dam. DNR was also notified of that incident as well.
“I don’t know what else we can do,” Rhodes said.
