The New Creek Volunteer Fire Department had another extremely busy month in April. The department responded to 72 emergency incidents, matching the month of February. Breakdowns of the incidents are as follows: EMS related, 48; good intent, 11; fire related, 5; service related, 4; and false alarm, 3. New Creek Volunteer Fire Department has experienced an increase in calls over the past decade, but even more so over the last year. From Jan. 1 to May 1 of 2007 the department responded to 153 incidents. From Jan. 1 to May 1 2008, the department responded to 261 incidents. This indicates a 71% increase in emergency calls. One factor for the increase is the addition of two ambulances. The department added the first ambulance back in Aug. 2007. The second was added in December. The ambulances operate within the same first due area as the department’s fire area. The ambulances also operate as second due to the entire south-western half of Mineral County, including Elk Garden, Burlington, and the City of Keyser. Also due to the close proximity, part of Grant County on Route 93 is also a dual response area with Grant County fire and EMS agencies.
The department takes pride in the fact that even with the increase in demand of services, the membership has maintained and even improved in all levels of care provided.
New applicants for the department have been steady in recent months. Several new members have joined the ranks of New Creek’s bravest over the past several months. As always, anyone interested in volunteering (whether active or social,) are encouraged to contact any current member, or stop by the station.
For the month of April, the department’s response time was 8.1 minutes. This has been lowered from the previous month which was 9.8 minutes. Response times this low are rare with most volunteer fire departments.
The department produces monthly statistics that are posted in the station and are available for anyone interested in viewing them. A copy of April’s statistics was also given to the Mineral County Commissioners office for review.
New Creek VFD will be participating in National EMS week which is scheduled for May 18 through May 24. Members will be setting up a display in conjunction with Wal-Mart during the week. EMS apparatus will be on display along with EMT’s and paramedics on hand to answer questions and hand out public education materials for both children and adults.
