KEYSER — Keyser City officials will conduct another organizational meeting Wednesday night for formation of a Crime Watch program in the city.
The 7 p.m. meeting at City Hall will feature City Councilman Isaac “Sonny” Alt, Keyser Police Chief Karen Shoemaker and members of the Keyser Recreation Board, who are collectively spearheading formation of the neighborhood crime watch program.
City officials held the first meeting two weeks ago and are hoping for a stronger turnout Wednesday. Alt, who developed the idea for a Crime Watch program to deter vandalism in the city's parks and playgrounds, said more than 50 people have indicated a willingness to participate. Now is the time for residents to get involved, he noted.
“It's open to anyone in the city, and I'm hoping that those who have said they would join, come out for the meeting,” Alt said.
Crime Watch volunteers do not have to
confront criminal suspects. They essentially serve as the eyes and ears for law enforcement agencies that can't maintain a 24/7 presence in every neighborhood. Such volunteers are simply asked to keep an eye on their neighbors' property and report any suspicious activity.
Alt also encouraged area ministers to become involved in the Crime Watch program as community leaders.
Mineral County Commissioner Wayne Spiggle attended the last Crime Watch meeting and is promoting development of an organized presence throughout the county.
