FORT ASHBY — This year’s Mineral County Fair will see a new, expanded midway and family-oriented entertainment and grandstand attractions when the 60th annual event opens Monday, July 27, in Fort Ashby.
Gambill Amusements of Steubenville, Ohio, will be making its first appearance at the fairgrounds. Gambill has played nearby fairs in Hampshire and Garrett counties and also at Canal Place in Cumberland.
“The biggest change is that there will be no rides on Monday. We’re offering free admission and the queen pageant and Charlie Kenney will be featured,” said Scott Turley, assistant fair chairman. All games will be open and food concessions also will be available, Turley said.
New to the grandstand this year will be the ATV Pulls. Turley said the event is open to local competitors and features three classes — Stock, Superstock and Modified. Registration for the Thursday event will take place at the gate on Thursday.
Saturday’s stage entertainment will feature Nashville recording artist Rockie Lynne. He has appeared nationally on CMT, GAC, the “Grand Ole Opry Live” and “Good Morning America.”  A U.S. Army veteran, Lynne’s debut album spawned three top 40 hits, with his debut single, “Lipstick” spending 10 consecutive weeks in the  No.1 slot on  Billboard’s country singles sales chart.
“It should be a great show. He’s very patriotic and incorporates local veterans into his shows,” said Turley.
The Jody Haught Band will take the stage Thursday. The father-daughter group has opened for major artists like Kenny Chesney, Vince Gill, Pam Tillis and Aaron Tippin.
Senior citizens age 62 and older will be able to attend each night for half off the $10 pay-one-price fee that includes gate admission, all rides, entertainment and parking.
Nightly grandstand entertainment in addition to Thursday’s ATV Pulls includes the Demolition Derby on Tuesday; Figure 8 Racing on
Wednesday; and the trucks hit the mud on Friday and Saturday for the Four Wheel Drive Mud Boggin’.
The Magic of the Caplingers will be featured in the midway area. “They have their own free-standing stage and will offer performances throughout the evening,” said Turley.
Other local entertainment slated to appear include Queen City Funk & Soul on Tuesday; Frankfort Middle School’s Teal Steel band on Wednesday; and Appalachia on Friday. All stages acts will perform shows at 7 and 9 p.m.
Mineral County 4-H and FFA students also play big roles in the fair each year. On Thursday, a Junior Livestock Show is set for 6 p.m. The 4-H Horse and Pony Show is planned at 11 a.m. Friday and will be held in the ring on the state Route 28 side of the fairgrounds. The Ag Field Day begins Friday at 6 p.m. The week concludes with the Livestock Sale on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Mineral County Community Outreach Service (CEOS) clubs will be giving demonstrations each evening in the main exhibit building.
The grand feature parade will line up beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday on Dan’s Run Road. The parade start is set for 4 p.m.
Advance sale season tickets will again be offered and provide a substantial savings on the nightly gate fee. Tickets can be purchased for $30 prior to 5 p.m. on Monday at the Mineral County Extension Office, Keyser; M&T Bank, Fort Ashby; FNB Bank, Fort Ashby; BB&T Bank, Fort Ashby; and the Mineral County Fair Office.
Gates open each evening at 6 p.m. with Saturday’s opening set at 5 p.m.
This year’s fair grand drawing takes place on Saturday at 11 p.m. Tickets are available from any member of the Fort Ashby Volunteer Fire Company and at the grand drawing booth.
