KEYSER — The Going Green Club at Keyser High School has been hard at work since its creation at the beginning of the year.
Thanks to grants written by Tabitha Woy, science teacher at KHS, the club has received not only money, but also fluorescent light bulbs and reusable shopping bags from Wal-Mart.
The club has also recently teamed up with Woy’s ninth grade science classes to pick up trash along the highway leading up to and extending from the High School. The club also collects aluminum cans, plastic grocery bags, and used light bulbs. They are currently running an exchange system where for every five plastic bags a student brings in, he or she will receive one reusable shopping bag courtesy of Wal-Mart, also for every five aluminum cans or three used light bulbs the student will receive one fluorescent light bulb. This exchange system is open to the community also and any items being brought in should be directed to Mrs. Woy’s room.
The club’s purpose is to help improve the environmental conditions of the community and school.
Woy also requires all of her classes to complete a “Going Green” project where each student must complete six hours of community service and also keep a log of all the things he or she does to conserve energy.
