PIEDMONT – For 150 years, Methodists have been in the Tri-Towns area. Many changes have taken place since then, but relatives of that era still attend what is now Trinity United Methodist Church in Piedmont.
The occasion of the 150th anniversary is being celebrated in a variety of ways this year.
On May 21, the United Methodist Women held their Mother/Daughter dinner, with 92 persons in attendance.
The theme, “Through the Years,” was carried out by displays of yesteryear items, including a black 1854 dress, an 1888 wedding dress (black), children's clothing of the 1920s, a Singer sewing machine, a man's collar box, autograph albums, mesh purses and much more.
Entertainment for the evening was a group of young girls from Bloomington. The “Party Animals” delighted and inspired the women with their witness in song and dance.
On May 24, Aldersgate Sunday, the church joined in singing hymns of Charles Wesley. It was also “Women in the Pulpit” Sunday, and the congregation was surprised by a visit from Susannah Wesley (portrayed by the Rev. Ann Harrison).
Other women recognized included Amy Dixon, Caroline Carroll and Maggie Martin.
One June 21, the Serenity Garden at the church was dedicated. Bricks with the names of loved ones were put into place by members of the church.
The garden is designed to be a quiet place for members to pause and reflect.
Several former members of Trinity Church have sent messages for the Book of Remembrance. Some of them left after college or due to employment, or joined other congregations. While in Piedmont, however, they left a footprint.
Trinity United Methodist remains a church where everyone matters, and all are welcome.
