During the May Bayard town meeting, Mayor Steve Durst announced that two nurses from Buckhannon desired to initiate a rehabilitation center in the community in the former Methodist Church building that most recently housed several apartments.
Durst told those present at the meeting that the halfway house would be a Christian nonprofit organization, taking female-only clients who are recovering from drug and alcohol abuse.
To understand the legal aspects of the halfway house within Bayard, Durst will contact the town’s attorney, Chris Davis.
“If the state will issue a license for the halfway house, then there’s nothing the town can do,” Durst said.
He also suggested the nurses visit Bayard and become acquainted with neighbors who live near to the former church building to “diffuse any panic.”
In other business, the mowing contract offered to Winks Handyman and Lawn Care was rejected by the business.
Lawn Care was the only business to submit a bid in April for mowing several areas in Bayard, and the town government officials voted to allow $1,200 per mowing.
According to Durst, the mowing will now be “pieced out,” with several community citizens taking care of the four different areas that needs to be mowed.
Another issue on the agenda was the sidewalk installation to offset flooding in the community.
Durst stated the sidewalk placement — which began on the Al Brown Road area — will halt water from running into the yards of residents during times of heavy rain.
The town officials agreed to have repairs made to the storm water channel and replace the terra cotta pipe with 12-inch PVC pipe.
The annual Memorial Day Service will be held at the Bayard Veteran’s Memorial Park on Sunday, May 15, at 2 p.m.
Taking part in the ceremony will be the color guard from the Oakland American Legion Proctor Kildow Post 71 and the rifle squad will consist of members of the Deer Park VFW Post 10077.
A special presentation of an American flag will be made to Navy veteran and Bayard resident George Layton.
The next meeting of the Bayard town council will be on Friday, June 6, at 6 p.m., at the town building on Spruce Street.
