KEYSER — Guitar Center 2007 Drum-Off Champion Donnie Marple is returning to his hometown of Keyser this week to perform with his new rock band — The Elmwood Band, at a special concert this Thursday at Church-McKee Arts Center at 7:30 p.m.
The 2005 graduate of Keyser High School and lifelong drummer has always had a dream of moving away after college to join a band and pursue a career as a professional musician.
This past June, Marple’s dreams became a reality when he moved to Nashville, Tenn. to begin his career as a drummer.
Soon after his move, Marple met up with members of The Elmwood Band, comprised of Nash Johnson, bass player from North Carolina, Saxophonist Rusty Keller from South Carolina and Derek Haight, leading vocalist and acoustic guitar player from Arkansas.
“We are a combination of rock, fusion, and jazz, “said Marple, when asked to describe the style of The Elmwood Band.
The name – Elmwood originated from members Johnson and Keller, who started the band.
“Before me and Derek were in the band, Nash and Rusty practiced 10 hours a day, writing and playing music,” said Marple.  “They thought up so many dumb names. Finally they decided on Elmwood Band because
we practice on Elmwood Avenue every day. We’re hoping to make that street famous.”
All four musicians, in their 20s, make a living exclusively from the band.
They are currently not signed on to a record label; however Marple said the band is working with producer Allen Shacklock to change that.
Practicing in their studio during the phone interview, Marple said the band has played in various venues such as bars, for fraternities, at high schools and at numerous benefit concerts.
“We will still play for free for a good cause,” said Marple.
This Thursday, Marple said he is most looking forward to seeing his friends from high school and college, and of course, spending time with his
family.
“I hope everybody has a chance to come see us,” said Marple, who described The Elmwood Band’s music as ‘pleasing to all ears – from ages 5 to 65’. “They won’t be disappointed.”
Tickets for The Elmwood Band can be purchased at the door of Church McKee Arts Center for a flat rate of $8 per person. Half of all proceeds will go towards Potomac State College of West Virginia University.
