KEYSER — “Buddy” is back home.
The little pug dog that was rescued from the icy waters of New Creek Sunday and taken to the Mineral County Dog Pound was reclaimed by his owners on Thursday.
Mineral County Humane Officer Melissa Kidwell said Buddy's owners read about the little dog's misadventure and were able to identify their pet by a unique brown spot on his head.
Three boys who were fishing along New Creek, in the vicinity of Harley O. Staggers Sr. Drive, rescued the dog from the creek and took him door-to-door to try to find his owner.
When their search yielded no results, they took him to an Airport Addition resident they knew who gave the friendly dog some food and a soft bed for the night before calling Kidwell.
Had the dog been an orphan, he would have eventually found a home, as Kidwell said she had a long waiting list of people who read about him in the News Tribune and wanted to give him a home.
“I talked to about 25 people who were interested,” she said.
Kidwell said the dog's owners live in the Limestone Road area. It was not known how he got so far from home.
With Buddy's story coming to a happy ending, Kidwell is urging anyone whose pet comes up missing to contact  Mineral County Animal Control so they can help reunite the animal with its family.
