KEYSER — Four Keyser High School students were recently notified of their selection to attend the West Virginia Governor’s Honors Academy.
Katherine Capaldi, Keith Davidson, Lydia Ringler, and Brad Ryan, along with 179 fellow outstanding West Virginia scholars, will have the opportunity to participate in this prestigious program.
The Governor’s Honors Academy (GHA) offers academically enriching classes and numerous activities that will challenge students’ thinking and stimulate their curiosity. The 2009 session of GHA will be held from June 27 to July 18 on the campus of Bethany College near Wheeling, W.Va. This year’s program will mark the 25th anniversary of West Virginia Governor’s Schools.
Initiated by Gov. John D. Rockefeller IV in 1984, the mission has consistently been to develop the potential of promising West Virginia high school juniors by providing them with an academically rich learning environment at an institution of higher education. This program is noted as one of the most esteemed educational experiences offered to high school students.
Keyser High School’s representatives have already distinguished themselves as scholars.
Katherine A. Capaldi is the daughter of Steven and Bernadette Capaldi and the sister of Cole Capaldi. She aspires to graduate from West Virginia University with a doctorate in psychology. She was recently elected president of Keyser High’s branch of the National Honor Society and is an active participant in Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honorary. She has completed AP classes in US History, English, and chemistry, and has completed honors Pre-Calculus.
Katherine is a dedicated member of the KHS marching, concert, and jazz bands and participates in such clubs as Hi-Y, ACES, Debate Club, and Going Green.
Keith Davidson is the son of Donna Haggerty and Keith Davidson. He has also earned membership in the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honorary. Keith is integrally involved in several school organizations including Hi-Y, ACES, and Debate Club. For the upcoming school year, he was elected to serve as president of both Hi-Y and Debate Club.
Recently Keith had the distinct honor of being elected to serve as the state-wide president of the first-ever West Virginia Future Educators Association. Upon completion of high school and college, he plans to enter the teaching profession with a specialization in chemistry.
Lydia Ringler is the daughter of Doris and Richard Ringler. She has also been recognized for her academic excellence by her induction into the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honorary. Lydia is a member of the KHS Marching and Concert bands and currently serves as clarinet section leader. She has been selected for both Regional Honors band and WVU Honors band. In addition she is an active member of ACES.
Outside of the school environment, Lydia is a dancer, having just completed her fifth year with Amanda’s Dance Reflections. She is also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Brad Ryan, the son of Mike and Jean Ryan, has also earned membership in the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honorary. He was recognized as a Golden Horseshoe winner and has reached the state level in both West Virginia Math Field Day and West Virginia Science Fair competitions. Brad is a member of the high school marching, concert, and jazz bands. As a junior he served his third year as section leader and first chair. Brad has participated in many regional music events: Regional Honors band, WVU Honors band, Potomac State Community band, and Cumberland Area Youth Musicians concert.
Athletically, Brad is a four-year starter on the varsity golf team and has been captain for two years.
In the community, Brad is involved in 4-H, where he has received the charting award, volunteered at the local library, and is the church pianist for both Grace and Fairview Methodist churches of Keyser.
These four students will have an opportunity to discover a wealth of new friends and new ideas that will undoubtedly impact them for the rest of their lives.
