KEYSER — The Keyser Mayor and City Council will meet this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. for their first of their two monthly meetings, with council members slated to receive a presentation on the state of the Keyser Library.
Connie Sutton, director of the Mineral County Library, said she makes a point of appearing before the council once a year or so to brief city officials on the library, because the city provides funding for library services.
“I’m just going to tell them how busy the library is,” Sutton said. “We’re doing great.”
Sutton said libraries tend to see patronage increase during challenging economic conditions, when residents learn they can check out DVDs for free, receive help on putting together a resume, and even send faxes.
“When economic times get bad, libraries get busier,” she said.
In addition to the library report, the council is also slated to take final action on abandoning a portion of Patrick Street to allow for development of a parking area. The ordinance for the abandonment was presented on a first reading at the last council meeting, and is expected to be ratified at today's meeting.
Finally, the council will receive an update on the parade for the “Mineral Bowl” football game between Keyser and Frankfort high schools. The game is scheduled for Oct. 30 at Keyser High's Tornado Alley Stadium. In the past, the parade has been held during the week of the game.
“They just want to make us aware so that police will know to block traffic and make other arrangements,” said City Administrator Deborah Pamepinto.
Prior to the city council meeting, the Water Board will meet at 2 p.m. this afternoon, followed by the Sanitary Board at 2:30 and the Recreation Board at 4 p.m.
