Fort Ashby, Burlington offer summer library programs

KEYSER – In addition to the main branch in Keyser, Mineral County's public libraries in Burlington and Fort Ashby will be hosting a variety of youth-oriented summer programs designed to engage children in crafts, music and other activities, and keep them reading over vacation.
Both libraries challenge their young patrons to “Get Creative @ Your Library.”
Signups for the summer reading program have already begun at the Burlington Library, where readers who complete the requirements – ie, read the books! -- will receive a T-shirt, goody bag and other prizes at the end of the summer.
The summer-time craft programs – to be held every Tuesday at 11 a.m. -- begin this week with “Music with Andrew.”
Following weeks' programs include:
June 23: Make Pottery with Diane Bright
June 30: Decorating cupcakes with Missy Roderick
July 7 : No program
this week
July 14: Taxidermy-Wild animals of West Virginia with Kathy Taylor
July 21: Talent Day under the direction of Carol Amtower.
The summer reading program winds down on July 28 with an ice cream party, when all books and paper work for the program must be turned in to the library. On Aug. 7, the library will host a pizza party at the Burlington Ruritan Grounds as the culminating activity for the summer.
In addition, young people can bring their artwork to the library throughout the summer for display in the children's room.

At Fort Ashby, the library is currently accepting signups for the summer reading program, with three age groups: Pre-K to grade three; grades four to eight; and grades 9-12. Books must ber ead by Aug. 1, with prizes awarded based on how many books have been ready throughout the summer. Special prizes will be awarded for first place in each category.
The Fort Ashby Library is also hosting a “Creativity Contest,” with prizes to be awarded for photos, writing, sculpture, drawing and crafts like woodwork and sewing. Entries will be accepted through July 31, and will be on display until Aug. 8, when prizes will be awarded.
Other special activities or programs going on this summer include:
June 16: Movie night with popcorn
June 25: “Get Creative” party for kids, from 3:30-5 p.m.
June 30: Scavenger hunt and game night for teens, from 5:30-7:30
July 14: Movie night with popcorn
July 16: Picnic/craft day for kids, from 3-5 p.m.
July 21: Scavenger hunt and swimming party for teens, from 4-7 p.m.
Aug. 8: Pizza and prize party for summer reading program
Aug. 15: Talent show at 6 p.m.
