KEYSER — The city of Keyser will join municipalities throughout the Mountain State in commemorating next week as Christian Heritage Week.
Following the lead of  Joe Manchin, who issued such a proclamation for the state of West Virginia, the Keyser City Council last month declared the week of Nov. 22-28 Christian Heritage Week in the city of Keyser.
Mayor William “Sonny” Rhodes said the week has been celebrated for many years at the state level, and among various communities in West Virginia, but this is the first time Keyser has taken part.
“We’ve never participated in this before, but I thought It was good for the city of Keyser to do so,” he said.
According to the Christian Heritage Week Web site, at www.chwinwv.org, the week of Thanksgiving has been commemorated as
Christian Heritage Week in West Virginia since 1992. More than 100 towns have participated by issuing proclamations.
Rhodes said he was happy to bring Keyser into the fold in light of next week’s Thanksgiving celebration. “It coincides with Thanksgiving, and that we have so much to be thankful for,” he said.
Organizers ask that municipal officials not only read the proclamations at their council meetings, but also distribute them to be read in community churches the Sunday before Thanksgiving.
The proclamation issued by Keyser reads in part, “Whereas Thanksgiving week marks the 18th consecutive Christian Heritage Week in West Virginia, continuing a tradition of annual proclamations beginning with Gov. Gaston Capterton in 1992 ...(and) whereas, quoting Psalm 127:1, 'Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it, unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman keeps awake in vain...Now therefore let it be known that Nov. 22-28, 2009 is hereby proclaimed Christian Heritage Week in the city Keyser, W.Va.”
Rhodes said the proclamation has been well received in communities throughout the Mountain State. “They’re doing it all across West Virginia,” he said. “I just thought it was time Keyser joined as well.”
